During the Renaissance, dance was recreation and exercise for the body, and after 1580 it was a metaphor of cosmic harmony and political order. In the 17th century dance became part of the education of every gentleman. Being able to dance the courante, chaconne, or the minuet was not only a form of relaxation, but also a demonstration of the mastery of a type of social diplomacy, which allowed for "making a good impression" and avoiding "missteps."
