FIVE MONTREAL HARVEST PLATES

It’s harvest time again in Montreal, the maple leaves have turned and leaf peepers crown the country roads on weekends, mixing with the trucks that bring the produce in to stock the cold rooms of the city’s top artisans. This is perhaps the season when our culinary uniqueness is the most obvious. The thing is, we have the same crops here as do many cities in our latitude – mushrooms, greens, tomatoes, squash – and yet our chefs always find new and ever more appealing ways to showcase the season’s bounty.

5 REASONS TO LOVE THE FNC

October is basically worldwide film-festival post-season, as all the heavy hitters – Sundance, Cannes, Toronto – have come and gone. But this is also my favourite time of year for movies, as Montreal’s best general-interest festival, the Festival du Nouveau Cinema, is in town.

TASTE MTL, MONTREAL’S RESTAURANT WEEK: NOVEMBER 1-11

Yes, I know – it does seem incredible that until this year, a food-filled city like Montreal doesn’t have a Restaurant Week. Until, now, that is. The good news is that this November, Tourisme Montreal will launch TASTE Montreal presented by the SAQ (the liquor commission) and several other major sponsors, will be hosting the first annual Taste Montreal – Restaurant Week.

INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL WOWS CULINARY CONTEST WINNERS

Sometimes the job of writing about food for Montreal Buzz seems less like a job and more like a lucky break – and this was certainly the case one sunny Saturday this summer when I joined six other lucky people who had won a Facebook contest put on by Montreal’s InterContinental Hotel…

5 FILMS TO CATCH AT THE MONTREAL WORLD FILM FEST

There was a time when the Montreal World Film Festival was bigger than any other other film festival in Canada, when the stars wore out the red carpets here at Place des Arts and the Cinema Imperial. But in recent years, our MWFF has distinguished itself as the place for young filmmakers to introduce their work to a wider audience, and for films from around the planet to strut their stuff on the world stage…

SPEND THE DAY FISHING IN MONTREAL

I’ve lived in Montreal for the better part of two decades, so I thought I’d seen this town from every angle (especially considering that I’m a reporter). But recently, I had a fresh view of our city beautiful city: From the water on a Montreal Fishing Tour…

MONTREAL’S BEST STRAWBERRY DISHES

Red Alert! Summer in Montreal means one thing to dessert lovers: Berries. Succulent ripe-and-ready berries are in pint boxes and baskets in the markets, and plates in the city’s finest restos. The early strawberry season is in full swing (though Quebec has another strawberry season in early fall, just in time for autumn preserving) and Montreal’s best restaurants are making full use of the bounty…

FANTASIA FILM FESTIVAL OFFERS THE WILDEST, WEIRDEST FARE

Of all the festivals that hit Montreal in the summer, one is a standout for film buffs: Fantasia. This gigantic film event for fans of genre cinema and Asian oddities has, in its own way, set the city apart on the underground film scene – we’re always dying to find out what the programmers who scour the nooks and crannies of genre film festivals around the world have brought back home for us to sink our teeth during this year’s festival.

JUST FOR LAUGHS’ MOUTH-WATERING “FOOD SOUK”

As you may know by now, food trucks are all the rage in Montreal this summer. Not to be left out, Just For Laughs has organized a whole-hog food fair of its own. “Souk” is an arab word for “marketplace”, and the eating scene down in the Quartier des Spectacles is indeed bustling and a bit chaotic, just like a gathering of wild and crazy foodies should be…
