If you’re looking to immerse yourself in a place where nature and culture meet in wild abandon and the music never stops, the massive outdoor music and arts festival Osheaga has you covered. On top of that, Osheaga amps up its oft-overshadowed Arts component during the month of July by inviting Montreal favourite Kid Koala to install his immersive audio-visual creation, Space Cadet, in the Biosphere. Has there ever been a better pairing of artist and venue? … More
In the middle of June, we run into a problem here in Montreal: there’s just too much to do. Choices must be made – and the broader your tastes, the tougher the choices. For me, I’m torn between what’s bound to be a crazy French hip-hop show and just relaxing at the Montreal Folk Festival. Or going to see a hilarious one-man play about trying to find a job (universal topics: always a winner) or seeing a bunch of super talented and enthusiastic dancers show off their stuff in an empty pool. Weird choices to have to make, but I wouldn’t have it any other way… … More
For 10 days this summer, June 25 to July 4, Montreal goes jazz crazy. Well, not really crazy, more like extremely excited to the point of literally dancing in the streets. And, while I’m being honest here, it’s not all jazz either, or at least not any typical definition of it. For instance: music-world royalty Prince just agreed to a two-night stand here! Yes, the 32nd edition of the Montreal International Jazz Festival is as eclectic and diverse as ever… … More
June. As if there isn’t a better month in Montreal for free stuff? Seriously, June is where it’s at for no-money good times – namely because this is when festival season kicks into high gear with all kinds of free outdoor music shows at the Jazz Fest, FrancoFolies and the Fringe Festival, world-class fireworks displays every week, and an all-day party celebrating Quebec culture… … More
Just as the first real heatwave of the year ends, this weekend begins – but that doesn’t mean it’s not packed with super hot stuff to do. So hot that not even a forecast of scattered showers can put a damper on this action. Which is a good thing because much of what’s going on this weekend happens outdoors: a huge Formula 1 race (and parties and a beer festival to go along with it), a massive celebration of French music from here around the world, weird and wild independent theatre and music and street fairs galore. … More
Canadians aren’t known for their bragging – even though we’ve got plenty to brag about. Not that I’m bragging about it… Seriously though, I just learned that we started the world’s first national parks service! And it’s 100 years old this year! Yeah, Parks Canada might be old but it still knows how to party… … More
June is here at last, the month we’ve been waiting for, when summer comes on strong and the festivals come on even stronger. It can be overwhelming at times – the Quartier des Spectacles fills with people, three or more festivals happen simultaneously with hundreds of events to choose from – but there’s something to suit every pace. This weekend, go dancing rave-style or nice and slow, take in some local independent theatre or the kind that tours the world, or lose yourself in operatic Italy or Latin love. … More
For most of my life, I did not love circuses. But Montreal turned that all around for me via some kind of cultural osmosis and because, as an arts journalist in this city, it was in fact impossible not to write about circuses. So by the time circus festival Montréal Complètement Cirque, the International Circus Arts Festival, came around, I was ready – and genuinely happy about it… … More
This last weekend in May could be said to mark, if not the beginning of summer, the end of spring. With sunny days and warm temperatures on the very, very near horizon, the final days of May are anything goes. Weird, wild experimental theatre and dance? Check. A fancy food festival? Check. An entire day wherein all the city’s museums are free of charge? Check. An outdoor dance party on an island in the middle of the St-Laurent river? Aw yeah, check… … More

Sunny days are here again! Yet it seems that a lot of the fun stuff to do this weekend in Montreal requires indoor adventuring, especially at night. The FMX Challenge brings the outdoors – at least the dusty, dirt biking part of it – inside the Bell Centre, while the Israel Film Festival manages to capture the spirit of a nation (and its divisions) on screen. Plus New Yorks meets Montreal in dance, Beethoven moves in, and new media art that proves the future is now. … More
