Bred and reared in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Alex arrived in this world with a baguette and corkscrew in hand. From that moment, his parents knew he was destined to be the Gay Life blogger for Tourisme-Montréal. Alex can frequently be found strutting the streets of the Old Port, picnicking along Canal Lachine, sipping espresso in the Mile End, or jiving it up in the Gay Village. Always in search of the next great adventure, Alex continues to live and love the best Montreal has to offer.
Born and bred in São Paulo, Brazil, I’m a relative newcomer to Montréal, which helps me see the city through a fresh outsider’s lense. My passion is food: I travel the world interviewing chefs and reviewing restaurants and hotels, on assignment for several different magazines (Vogue Brazil, Marie Claire Brazil, Wish Report, Prazeres da Mesa, etc). My québecoise mother and seven years living in this province have instilled in me a deep pride of its culinary traditions. I’ve written about local chefs, artisanal cheeses and wineries extensively, in publications like the Toronto Star, and Tidings and En Route magazines, among others. Since moving to Montreal I started the site Montreal for Insiders, which is one of a series of blogs and online columns that I find time to write, in between meals.
I've been a Montréal-based writer and editor, focusing mostly on music, nightlife and travel, for over 10 years. I have university degrees in English Literature and Journalism, but perhaps more relevant are the honorary PhDs in Festology and Restauranting that I've awarded myself. J'aime Montréal because Montréal is easy to love.
As a writer who specializes in film, food and travel culture the world over, I spend half my time in the air in LA on the movie beat, or in France chasing down the latest wine trend. But I live here, in the most beautiful city in North America, and I want to kiss the ground every time I land. Instead, I eat it--like most Montréalers, I have an endless appetite for the nourishment this town has to offer, both food for the palate and food for the soul. Montréal has a packed calendar of world-class film, music and arts festivals. There are hundreds of things to do, see, eat and drink every day and night of the year. Come with me to the markets and to the movies.
Before planting roots here in Montréal, I lived in Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary – and nowhere else is it more fun to be a girl, um, a woman, than right here in la belle province. I’ve been reporting on style, design, spas, restaurants, bars, and hotels (a.k.a. all the good things in life) for over a decade now. As the Montreal Editor for FASHION magazine and author of A Hedonist’s Guide to Montréal (coming soon), I know where to find the best mani-pedis, which boutiques offer optimum retail therapy, how to wine and dine like queen—and where to find the most scenic places for imbibing mojitos with the girls, um, ladies.
I tend to seek out both the beautiful and the strange in arts and culture - or it just finds me. Which isn't too difficult in Montreal, where art, dance, theatre, music and cultural phenomena of all sorts crop up everywhere. Whether it's a hot-ticket, world-renowned dance troupe or a solo exhibition by an artist I've had my eye on for years, there's always something being created. The city simply inspires it. As a journalist with a background in media studies and art theory, I'm constantly struck - and inspired – by Montreal's creative energy: a unique mix of pop and politics, high art and street sensibility, contemplation and passion, never the same way twice.
Sophie Naima Caird is a Montreal writer by way of Vancouver. She writes about various aspects of Montréal life, from cat shows to bar shows.
I grew up surrounded by art, both ancient (my grandfather was an archeologist) and modern (my mother and sister are artists), so it was natural, I guess, that I would major in Art History at university. I love the art scene in Montreal. I wander down amidst the underpasses and photograph graffiti - before the tags get erased. I gaze up at the artworks above the Cité Multimédia. I visit studios and galleries all over the city. Thérèse Dion, the gallerist who sadly passed away, taught me a lot about contemporary art, especially photography, which became my passion, and which I now collect. My morning inspiration is an Adad Hannah photo, which I stare at while sipping coffee.
