It’s no coincidence that the upcoming Grand Burlesque Show originated in the sexy city of Montreal, as I guarantee that you won’t find saucier or more creative burlesque performers anywhere else on the continent…

The Grand Burlesque Show, March 29-31 at Club Soda, is produced by the simmering Scarlett James (pictured above), Montreal’s belle of the burlesque ball. This showgirl is an ambassador of retro glamour with a beauty reminiscent of early screen sirens, a venerated performer and a legend in Montreal’s burlesque scene. I’ve heard that Scarlett James sometimes performs in a 5-foot-tall martini glass, which certainly sounds like something that needs to be seen in person.

At The Grand Burlesque Show, you can look forward to drinking champagne or wine while soaking up the lady likes of Lada Redstar (Germany), Jett Adore (Chicago), La Divina (Dallas) and tons of other cheeky performers, acrobats, comedians and actors. This year’s theme is Island Fever, so there’s also a good chance that you’ll see some coconut bikinis.

Montreal is such an audacious city that it’s no surprise that the burlesque scene is thriving. Consequently, there are a myriad of events and companies to choose from, most prominent being the Montreal Burlesque Festival (September 27-29), which boasts 3 days of nonstop theatre featuring various vamps and vagabonds of the highest calibre. If you’re feeling bold and want to indulge in your inner vamp, you can participate in the workshops and classes the festival offers.

The Blue Light Burlesque are a local troupe that describe their shows as “classy, campy and sexy”. They perform a series of sketches (based on a theme) that take place in the bygone era of vaudeville and music halls. Their next show, The 4 Seasons, will be at Cafe Campus on April 14. Glitz and glamour is guaranteed.

If you’re looking for something edgy, check out the Blood Ballet Cabaret, which features a bevy of babes (including the ravishing and devastatingly beautiful Fuhrious Nina) led by Miss Bloody Mary Anne. Their shows are filled with titillating musical numbers and acrobatics feats inspired by the circus arts, theatre and of course, the art of burlesque. If you’d like to spice things up with some smart and ribald entertainment, check out their next show on April 22 at the Belmont.
