It’s not every day that a museum or gallery show pulled entirely from past works comes together as well as the Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal’s summer exhibition, Déjà – The Collection on Display. But how the show gels, thematically and aesthetically, isn’t due to similarities between the hundred-plus works on display, but due to their execution – almost all of the pieces conjure excitement about the process of creation, the thrill of what great art can do to inspire and move us… … More

When you think of the Circus and Montreal, no doubt your thoughts first turn to Cirque du Soleil. But a huge reason that Cirque has become such an international success is that it got its start in Quebec, a province long filled with skilled circus performers. Montreal is lucky to have a great Edward Burtynsky show on now at Art 45. I love his work. His photos are truly relevant. They are shocking to us as we gaze at beautiful seas, shining like satin – under a cover of black oil or at a large boat, dwarfed by an enormous expanse of slick sea. Organized by the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, Burtynsky’s series, called appropriately Oil, is on a world tour. Hopefully his heart-wrenching renderings of the recent catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico will act as a wake-up call for those responsible for this toxic industry – on which we are all so dependent. … More
The first glimpse of Liliana Berezowksy’s work at Galerie CIRCA is inviting. A soft, pink suede chair-like piece sits on the floor to greet you. Indeed, for a nano-second, you think it is a contemporary chair, offering comfort. Therein lies the rub: Your first clue are the nails… A large roundish piece – can I call it ‘sculpture’ I ask myself ? – sits in the middle of the gallery. … More
Montreal’s Musée d’art contemporain (‘’the MAC’’) features Music Video V, an annual summer fest of video clips. Videos, today’s urban vocabulary, zoom around the world on YouTube, FaceBook and other sites. The MAC’s exhibit shows videos created by artists. From the internationally renowned Pipilotti Rist (I lay on the floor and watched one of her videos projected onto a church ceiling at the Venice Biennale), to Canada’s Rodney Graham and Montrealer Pascal Grandmaison – artists re-interpret and re-invent the medium at this fun show. … More
