  • GABOR SZILASI LOOKS AT QUEBEC'S PAST

    Posted by

Montreal’s McCord Museum is featuring Hungarian photographer Gabor Szilasi. Organized by guest curator David Harris, Gabor Szilasi: The Eloquence of the Everyday combines portraits, domestic and commercial interiors, cityscapes and images of rural life. It also includes environmental portraiture, a genre of photography in which the setting—a person’s home, workplace, or even a public place—plays an essential role in describing the subject… … More

A new installation outside the recently renovated SAT (Society for Arts and Technology) is now lighting up part of boulevard St-Laurent. Pixiness, created by the visual artist Axel Morgenthaler, is a major work that fits into the lighting attractions found all over the Quartier des Spectacles. With 960 LED lamps, this impressive artwork offers a 24-hour a day show, constantly evolving as passersby can use their iPhones to interact with this unique piece of technological art. … More

    Giamatti has a city crush

Probably the biggest news item about Montreal this week, though not for Montrealers, is that we’re the city dreams are made of. Seems that Barney’s Version is has muscular awards-season legs–Paul Giamatti, who plays the titular Barney in the movie, won the Best Actor award at the Golden Globes (which are widely considered to be precursors to the Oscars in March). … More

  • A GOODBYE LETTER FROM DANIEL BAYLIS

    Posted by

Dear Readers of The Montreal Buzz,

I don’t want to alarm you, but a visit to Montreal could be life changing.

In the summer of 2002, I flew from western Canada to spend a week in the dynamic French Canadian city. I walked through Old Montreal. I shopped on the Plateau. I climbed Mount Royal. I danced in the Village.

I fell in love with Montreal. … More

  • NIGHT LIGHTS SHINE BRIGHT

“Trippy” was how my colleague described them. So I had to go and check out the “big white ball things” in front of Place des Arts and on the esplanade of Place des Festivals.

In summer, the area comes alive with water jets, sprinkling people that walk by or completely dousing those who just can’t take the heat. In winter, as I’ve now seen with my own eyes, the public space appears to have been invaded from outer space. … More

  • MONTREAL MUSEUMS MATCHED TO YOUR PERSONALITY TYPE

    Posted by

After the success of last summer’s wildly successul, Montreal festivals matched to your personality type, we’ve decided once again to incorporate our otherwise useless psychology degrees to help you find a Montreal experience that’s just right.

Montreal has over fifty museums and galleries, each one specializing in a specific domain of creativity or human achievement or environmental phenomena.

Here are ten of our favorites. But which one is right for you? … More

It was a fun year for The Montreal Buzz as we chased down our favorite rockstars for their sentiments on the city. In random order, here are our ten most memorable musician moments. … More

  • MONTREAL'S DELUXE DEPARTMENT STORES

    Posted by

    A

Akin to Barney’s and Saks in the U.S., Shoe Mart in the Philippines, Seibu in Japan, El Corte Inglés in Spain, and Selfridges in the U.K.; downtown Montreal has her own fancy department stores. Three major ones are La Maison Ogilvy, The Hudson’s Bay Company, and Holt Renfrew. I encourage shoppers and visitors to visit all of these beautifully historic “cathedrals of commerce” whose turn-of-the-century architecture reinforces the adage, They just don’t build ‘em like they used to. … More

  • DIY: MONTREAL CHRISTMAS TOUR

    Posted by

Montreal’s public farmers’ markets are not only places to do your grocery shopping, but also gathering places for the community. The market is also an ideal place to seek out the ingredients for a traditional or modern holiday feats—Foie Gras half-baked in a terrine is a traditional Christmas treat from the Old Country, and these days, chefs around town like to sass it up with maple syrup, ginger and ice wine. … More
