WELCOMING THE WARMTH OF AFGHAN CUISINE

It’s raining and cold outside. You’re tired of waiting for Mother Nature to cooperate. And you feel like treating your senses to a little warmth. Why not try a restaurant with unique food from a country that has much more to offer than the news would have you believe.

Afghan food is the perfect way to warm up body and soul. With lots of savory spices, this cuisine is at the crossroads between India and Turkey. The scents of cardamom, cumin and coriander add an exotic touch, yet are subtle enough for those who don’t care for the strong taste of South Asian dishes.

The three women in charge of the Khyber Pass kitchen lovingly prepare traditional Afghan dishes like eggplant borani (fried eggplant served with garlic yogurt), melt-in-your-mouth lamb kebabs, and aromatic basmati rice. You can even get a trio of different rice dishes with your main course: coriander; lamb juice with cumin and cardamom; and saffron. How enticing!

But in the end, the added warmth comes from the personal touch: the owner will gladly tell you about his country – stories you don’t get on CNN. Plus, the wool carpets hanging on the walls add to the cozy ambiance. A perfect escape from a rainy day.
