For all you queens, here’s a big “riddle” for you:

What’s versatile, long, and tickles your funny boner?

Answer: Why, it’s the Just For Laughs Festival!

(insert sad trombone sound here)

Okay, I’m lame and I need to work on my material. But thankfully, for everyone, I won’t be on stage at this summer’s comedy fest making a mockery of myself. Instead, the folks at Montréal’s Just For Laughs Festival are importing the world’s comedic gurus. The festivities will feature a diverse line up of shows, streets artists and comedians that will undoubtedly elicit chuckles and put the “funny factor” in your vacation.

Here are my personal Just For Laughs “Insider Recommendations”:

FOR THE BIG GAY FAMILY CROWD…

Mommy Queerest – Award-winning comedian Judy Gold hates one-person shows… that’s why she’s doing her second one, Judy Gold is Mommy Queerest! She has a lot to say about being the mother of two boys – and being an out lesbian comic. There is no stone left unturned: her mother, anti-depressants, nursing homes, parenting, gay marriage, and of course what she truly thinks about her kids (they are annoying, expensive, and they better pluck out her chin hairs when she’s in the Hebrew Home for the Aged).

FOR THE HARDCORE…

The Nasty Show – Feeling a little blue? I have the antidote – an evening of no-holds-barred hardcore humour by the crudest comedians working today. See why the Nasty Show remains the fastest-selling show of the Festival. Hosted by Bobby Slayton.

A reminder: if you’re easily offended, you’re f***ed.

FOR THE AUTHENTIC LOCAL EXPERIENCE…

Best of Homegrown Competition – Catch the rise of the next northern star! Debra DiGiovanni (Last Comic Standing) hosts a line-up of nine of the most promising Canadian comics from coast to coast, including Montréal’s queer comedic darling, the ravishingly delicious Deanne Smith.

Montréal LOVES Deanne Smith.

FOR THOSE WHO LIKE HALF-NAKED, CHISELED MEN…

Balé de Rua – The hot street dance that is taking the world by storm! From Brazil’s shantytown favelas to the world’s biggest stages, Balé de Rua’s 15 sexy performers are giving audiences everywhere a reason to get up and shake it. Vibrant colours and incredible performances.

FOR THE BUDGET TRAVELER…

Check out the street art, which includes musical theatre, improvisation, world music, circus arts, custom-tailored comedy as well as a big parade. The action can be found on Boulevard De Masioneuve!

FOR THE BIG HITTERS…

Whoopi Goldberg
Bill Cosby
Caroline Rhea (Montreal native!)
John Cleese

The Just For Laughs Festival runs from July 16 – 26 here in Montréal. Happy Festival!
