  • IMAGE+NATION: MORE THAN JUST GAY FILMS

    Posted by

The tag line for this year’s Image+Nation film festival is “Around the world in 10 days” – which is perfect for gays who appreciate international travel, but have a close-to-home budget.  With over twenty documentaries highlighting LGBT human rights, complex struggles with body image, lesbian feminist history, queer culture and the overlooked “B” in LGBT, you are guaranteed access to a world that might be unfamiliar.

But the festival is not just about queer celluloid. It is also the opportunity to mingle with like-minded folks who appreciate cinema, creativity and glasses of wine.

Here are some of the main events where you’ll be able to meet a Montrealer…

    ——————————————————————————————————————

SOIRÉE COURTS @ LAIKA – A civilized way to watch gay films is in a trendy Montreal café with a glass of vino in your hand.  This Thursday evening of thirteen short films is free, which enables you to buy me a glass of wine. I’ll be there and I’ll be thirsty, so come say hi. Thursday 4 November (7 PM). Laika — 4040 St-Laurent Boulevard.

GENERATION Q – Over the past few weeks the Internet has been bursting with folks saying “It Gets Better” – expressions of encouragement to those young LGBT folks who are facing harassment around their gender or sexual identities. For textured look at the queer youth reality, check out this series of shorts, and see what it means to be young and queer in the 21st century. Short films play together on Sunday 7 November (5:15 PM), Cineama de Seve — 1400 Maisonneuve West.

ENTRY POINT: QUEER REFUGEES IN MONTREAL – These 13 documentaries illustrate the complexity of being forced to leave everything connected to home behind and powerfully convey the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) refugees living in Montreal. Sunday 7 November (1:15 PM). Cineama de Seve — 1400 Maisonneuve West.

PARTY: MEC PLUS ULTRA – Montreal’s hottest “out-of-village” monthly gay event is the official Saturday night party of Image+Nation. Dress up as your favorite gay movie character, or just come out and script your own happy ending. Free drink before 11 PM. Saturday 6 November. Belmont Bar — 4483 St-Laurent Boulevard.

CLOSING FILM – Ending the Image+Nation film festival on a sexy/strong note is a torridly romantic drama set in Tunisia – The String. Judging by the trailer (see below), the audience will be treated to a slice of family tension, soften by the handsome, tanned bodies of the two lead males. I predict feeling VERY satisfied. Sunday 7 November (8:30 PM) — 1455 Maisonneuve West.
