  • LESBIAN HEAVEN ::: MONTREAL ROLLERDERBY

    Posted by

I love this sport. Tough girls zipping around a ring on roller-skates. The wipe-outs are cringe-inducing, the energy is intense and the crowd is rowdy.

    And the beer flow-eth cheaply.
You have one last chance to catch a game this year.

    Check out the deets…

If you are unfamiliar with the world of roller derby, here’s a helpful summation from Wikipedia…

“Contemporary roller derby is international, predominantly female, typically operates on an amateur (or unpaid) circuit, and has a strong do it yourself ethic which often features both athleticism and a satirical punk third-wave feminism aesthetic.”

When it comes to roller derby in Montreal, our women bring it. Our All-star team, The New Skids on the Block, consistently rank as one of the top teams in North America.

But, to be honest with you, I don’t fully understand all the roller derby rules. There is one player with a star on her helmet who zips around, trying to pass all the other gals. In doing so, she is often hip-checked, slammed, tripped and/or annihilated by the other team. (If more detail is required, you can brush up on the roller derby rules here.)

The crowd, despite it’s aggressive, insatiable appetite for bone-crushing wipe-outs, is very queer friendly. I’m not going to beat around the bush here, roller derby features some of Montreal’s hottest lesbians.

And the hip gay boys go to cheer them on.

Montreal Roller Derby: MTLRD Championships 2009!
    Saturday, August 8
    Arena St. Louis
5633 St. Dominque (in trendy Mile End)
    Bus #55
Tickets available at the door ($15)
Doors open at 6:30 pm, Game time 7:00 pm

Insider Tip: Don’t be shy. Get close to the action by sitting directly beside the rink. You’ll see beer towers forming. Team up with those around you and build the biggest beer tower. If you’re lucky one of the girls will wipe out, spilling into your tower, eliciting a crazy, screaming frenzy from the spectators.

For a preview of the roller derby action, check out the video from my colleague, Tamy Emma Pepin.
