  • SEXY THEATER: THE MID-LIFE CRISIS OF DIONYSYS

    Posted by

Last week I was wandering the streets of Montréal and my eyes fell upon the poster for “The Mid-Life Crisis of Dionysus.” As you can see, the graphic for this unique theatrical experience features a bunch of nude hotties touching each other. Naturally, my interest peeked.

Check out how you can get some of this smorgasborgiastic extraspectaculaganza theater action while you are in Montréal…

Sure the poster is fun to look at, but what is this show all about? Well, in living up to its name, this is a tale of a mid-life crisis. Dionysus, the god of Theatre, has taken on the responsibilities of marriage, mortgage, and children. The show must go on — but how long can the showman?

It is an eclectic mix of Greek epic tragedy, modern musical, burlesque and spiritual smut-fest.

And if we wanted to explore an analysis of the show’s deeper themes, we might be drawn into a dialogue of adulthood shame, especially in regards to our bodies.  The artistic director, Jeremy Hechtman, says, “Dionysus is all about indulging in pleasure, be it wine or overeating. Ironically, children often relate to the Dionysian philosophy because, unlike adults who often feel shame for surrendering to excess, children haven’t been conditioned to feel that kind of remorse” (quote via Hour.ca).

The local papers are gushing about The Mid-Life Crisis of Dionysus!

“As heady as wine and as deliciously indulgent.”

    - Hour

“MainLine Theatre has another runaway hit on their hands.”

    - Westmount Examiner

“An energetic bacchanalian romp that mixes Ancient Greek myth with vaudevillian Jewish shtick.”

    - Montreal Gazette

So check it out and see how to manage a mid-life crisis in style!
