In March 2010, the National Geographic named Montreal one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. Part of the reason for that is the city’s extensive cycling paths and Montreal’s popular public bike system, Bixi. But that’s not all. For 26 years, The Tour de L’Île de Montreal has played a major role in positioning the city on the international scene as a North American biking capital.
Held on Sunday June 6, The Tour de l’Île is the perfect opportunity to discover Montreal on two wheels – and spot some of the craziest helmets, outfits and bicycles around. Last year, the 25th edition attracted no fewer than 35,000 participants, which makes it an awesome event to meet locals in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
The bike tour is 50km and starts on Parc Avenue. It starts at 9:15 am and a big show awaits the cyclists upon their arrival at Jeanne-Mance Park.
Now, for those of you who are interested in a shorter (and more unusual) tour, there is a Night Bike Tour on Friday June 4. Participants come dressed in all kinds of illuminated costumes, and most of all, seem to be very happy to be mixing Montreal’s biking culture with Montreal’s epic nightlife.
In any case, both are extremely fun and rewarding. If you’re interested in participating, make sure you register online! Also, send us your pictures and we’ll post the best ones!
