MONTREAL FASHION WEEK WARM-UP

Posted on August 28th, 2012 by .

Fashion lovers nota bene: The spring and summer 2013 fashion shows are about to take centre stage. Whether you’re a design fanatic or simply curious about our local designers, this is one of Montreal’s choicest events…

Montreal Fashion Week takes off right after Labour Day weekend on Tuesday, September 4-7, 2012. The city’s hottest designers will be rolling down the runway at a new locale: Galerie Arsenal, which is in Griffintown, a.k.a. the new up-and-coming ‘hood. And here in Montreal, you don’t have to be a member of the press to attend- You can buy tickets for single shows and for one and four day passes.

If you’re not sure who or what to see, check out the selection of videos below, which showcases some of my favourite designers – or check out the Montreal Fashion Week website (where there are photos and bios of all participating designers) and let your sartorial eye be your guide. And, by the way, if you come dressed to the nines, you might just get snapped by one of the gajillion bloggers that are known to swarm the site. In such as case, remember to smize (smile with your eyes) and work your most photogenic angle.

Anastasia Lomonova: Known as of late for her cascading pleats in dark or earth tone hues, Lomonova’s evening gowns are visual expressions of elegance, poetry and beauty. It’s been announced that this season she has a “surprise” up her sleeve, so who knows what will happen.

Bettina Lou: Marie-Ève Émond is the petite designer behind the Bettina Lou label. And it seems she creates sweet and pretty clothes, just like she is. Appropriate for the office if styled with proper hose and conservative heels, her smartly tailored looks also carry a heady dose of vixen that is just waiting for the right wearer to strut it down the sidewalk.

Denis Gagnon: Montréal’s cult designer is reaching mass appeal these days. If last fall and winter’s collection of leather-embellished avant-garde looks for women and men were any indication, Gagnon just keeps better every season. This show is probably number one on every magazine editor’s list.

Martin Lim: Having just launched their label a couple seasons ago, husband and wife duo Danielle Martin and Pao Lim have hit the fashion scene with a bang. Last year the couple won the coveted first prize in the Mercedes-Benz StartUp competition – and the next thing you know, one of their dresses spotted on the red carpet at Cannes. Not so much one to watch, but one to keep up with.

UNTTLD: José Manuel St-Jacques and Simon Bélanger are alums of reality television – our version (in French) of Project Runway called La Collection. Daring to be seductive in unusual – but highly coveted  – ways, this two-man show has in the past has experimented with lace, leather, and synthetic hair. Somehow they make it work. Their runway shows also have a reputation for being raw and dramatic.
