MONTREAL GAY LIST: JULY

Posted on July 2nd, 2010 by .

Each month THE MONTRÉAL BUZZ features five gay or gay-friendly things to do or see around the city. Recommendations range from parties to bistros to festivals to boutiques to cultural events.

Here are some suggestions for the month of July.

[contest] QUEER OF THE YEAR – Wanna travel? But don’t have the big pink dollars to spare? Well here’s your chance to get to Montreal for free this summer! Record a short video that attests to why you might be the ‘Queer of the Year.’ Register it at www.queeroftheyearcontest.com. Get your peeps to vote for your video. Five lucky contestants from anywhere across the world will win trips to Montreal to compete for the title. July 15 submission deadline!

[LGBT festival] DIVERS/CITÉ – Many people mistake this festival for ‘Montreal Pride.’ But it’s not pride, it’s an arts and cultural festival that celebrates diversity. I know what you’re thinking, “You say potato, I say tomato” (or something like that). But when we’re done dancing around the semantics of the Divers/Cité festival, it boils down to a week of kick-ass artistic programming.  This year’s line up includes Joey Arias, Lady Bunny, Ana Paul, Sister Sledge and more! And don’t miss ‘Mascara’ – which Wikipedia defines as the “biggest drag queen event in the world.” July 26 – August 1.

[comedy] JUST FOR LAUGHS – A gay has got to keep a sense of humor. If not, the world is just going to queer bash us back into a pre-Stonewall depression. What better way to keep the funny bone tickled then the greatest comedy festival in the world? My recommendation is to check out the Nasty Show, which promises to take dirty humor to penetrable levels. Plus loads of free street performers will be wandering les rues for fags with financial limitations. July 2 – 25.

[art] FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL MONTREAL EN ARTS – It’s a big name for a simple concept – an outdoors art festival that literally repaints the landscape of the Montreal Gay Village.  For 11 days you can witness live painters, street installations, sculpture, short film and more. Be sure to participate in the 50-foot collective painting where every passerby can delve into his or her inner homo artist. And trust me, art fags are really hot right now. July 1 – 11.

[music] OSHEAGA – Arguably the greatest annual outdoor music event in Canada happens the same weekend as Divers/Cité. How can we handle so much awesomeness? We muster through. Held on the historic grounds of Expo ’67, the festival features a mix of avant-garde immerging artists, with great food and an eco-conscious design approach. This year’s line up includes Keane, Arcade Fire, Metric, DEVO, Owen Pallett, Weezer and more. This is definitely the hip homo’s event of July.
