For many people, including me before I moved to Montréal what seems like many moonlit nights ago, stand-up comedy was enjoyed primarily on vinyl that their Dads owned or seen on comedy shows headlined by a big name.
But seeing comedy in person is an entirely different beast. When it’s good, I can think of no better way to spend an evening. I mean, music is fine, but it’s not all that funny. Except for Weird Al. Sort of. When stand-up comedy is bad, which, at local amateur nights, is at least half the time, it’s truly excruciating. Luckily, from July 17th-21st, Montreal is home to Just for Laughs, one of the world’s great laugh fests…
Just for Laughs brings in huge names, like this year’s headliners Bill Crosby, Martin Short and Whoopi Goldberg, to name a few. But honestly, have any of those said anything funny in the last decade? If you’re saying yes, then you and I have entirely different sense of humour. Which is fine, because when it comes to comedy, if it makes YOU laugh, then it is funny. Period.
But there are some are some comedians, as well as gala nights and lesser-known showcases that I can’t wait to see. Like Louis CK, one of the most respected working comics in America today. The creator of the cult-hit “Pootie Tang,” an HBO and late-night show regular, Louis CK can be dirty, rude and very often incredibly brilliant and insightful (as the clip below ably demonstrates). He plays Friday, July 24th at Metropolis.
There are plenty more shows that promise to be side-splitting and knee-slapping. I’ll be posting some profiles in the weeks to come. But if you just can’t wait, check out the official Just For Laughs website
