Osheaga + MEG = Awesome

If you’re in town for Osheaga, Montreal has more than enough nightlife stuff going on to keep you dancing before, during and after the massive two-day concert at Parc Jean-Drapeau. From Thursday straight through to Sunday, be it in the city, in a park or even on a boat, Montreal is having tons of fun…

A big part of the reason that Osheaga has taken commanding control of the first weekend in August is their partnership with MEG (Montreal Electronic Groove). Now in their 11th year, this 4-night electronic-of-all-types festival features its own stage at Osheaga, club events, live music showcases, some 5-a-7s and one not-to-be missed party on a boat – a great way to get to know Montreal while having a blast. From late afternoon to early, early in the morning, read on for the run-down…

Thursday: The lusciously long weekend kicks off with a BBQ and 5-a-7 at Divan Orange. If you feel like sticking around the Divan Orange (French for the “orange couch”, so you know it’s comfortable), they’re hosting an MEG showcase from 10pm-3am featuring music from Random Recipe, Cougarettes and more. Happening at almost the same time (6pm-3am), just a couple blocks south on St-Laurent, is a DJ night at the very cool Laika with Mir and Slim Jim. And if that wasn’t enough, Zoobizarre, one of my favorite venues in the city, has France’s Dirty Sound System all night and Olympia has Omnikrom, Green Go and more…

Friday: Hopefully, you’ve got more pep in those dancing shoes, because Friday is packed to the party gills. Divan Orange has another 5-a-7 and a 10pm showcase (featuring the excellent Fleet Foxes-ish Museum Pieces), Laika has DJs all night and, down at Studio JPR, things get clubby up with Fischerspooner and Maus. If you somehow need more, there’s the partyful sounds of Think About Life at Olympia.

Saturday: By now, you’ve got the idea: if you’re on St-Laurent, Divan Orange and Laika are necessary stops for drinks, dancing and pretty people watching. But, today, my friends, it’s time to head out to Parc Jean-Drapeau for Osheaga. The fest has two main stages, where you’ll catch acts like Coldplay and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but walk down a path into the middle of the woods and you’ll find the MEG stage and some of best music of the whole weekend. On Saturday starting at 1pm, they’ve got a Somalian-Canadian rapper K’naan, the enchanting Swedish indie star Lykke Li, French electro phenomenon La Roux and the world’s foremost mash-up maestro, Girl Talk.

New to this year, Osheaga has partnered with Montreal’s beloved Piknic Electronik, just a 5 minute walk from the venue, and your Osheaga ticket gets you in free! Starting at 2pm, they’ve got a great line-up that includes the incredible Ghislain Poirier… and if that somehow wasn’t enough for you, at the same time back in the city, a little group named Franz Ferdinand are playing at Metropolis.

Sunday: Still with me? MEG’s Osheaga stage has Tiga, Crystal Castles and more. Laika kicks off at 6pm with Francis T. But the highlight event of this day requires you get up a bit earlier: MEG’s infamous “I’m on a boat” party, departing Quai Alexandra (in Old Montreal) at 11:30am. The cruise lasts until 3:30pm. You’ve hair-of-the-dog drinks, DJs like Data and LA Riotsand a floating party that gives you an incredible view of Montreal from the water…

Monday: Sleep.
