This list, put together from an exhaustive cross-Canada trip by Montreal Gazette food critic Sarah Musgrave in consultation with the country’s savvy food experts, is considered the last word on dining in Canada- and to our delight but not surprise- the list is again stacked with Montreal restaurants that represent the cutting edge of our city’s dining scene. Here is a cook’s tour of Montreal’s three best new restos!… Van Horne Cuisine du Marché: Art is a high priority at this beautiful little white bistro on avenue Van Horne in Outremont: there’s a Richard Bernstein litho of Picasso behind the bar and a wall gallery of Lichtenstein plates in the dining room and the food is high art as well. Take in free shows by local jazz musicians performing in duos, trios and quartets every day at 5 p.m. at Dièse Onze (4115A St-Denis): October 8, it’s the versatile Trio Jean-François Groulx; October 9, upright bassist Adrian Yedady leads a quartet; October 11, the Brazilian sound of Trio Bruxo and David Ryshpan; October 12, the Alexandre Côté Quintet; October 13, the elegantly traditional Cameron Wallis Quartet; October 14, the Chet Doxas Trio plays with NYC’s Matt Stevens; and on October 15, energetic pianist Eric Harding helms a quartet.

(dance together) Every month, Place des Arts, part of the Quartiers des Spectacles, invites the public to participate in a different dance as part of their program Le Bal du Dimanche: this month, on October 23 at 2 p.m., it’s the merengue! Join choreographer Chantal Dauphinais and learn the basics of the dance style as a live band plays along. Also at Place des Arts, from 5:15–5:45 every day until October 21, see Solo 30×30, an in-situ dance work by dancer and choreographer Paul-André Fortier, who, among the crowds of people passing through, coming home from work, heading to dinner, meeting friends, will dance in silence for 30 minutes.

(halloween treats) Montreal loves to make a big deal out of Halloween – as if we really need an excuse to dress up and act wild and crazy? Well, Halloween let us take our antics to the next level anyway. With parties in bars and clubs all over town all weekend, October 31 might seem like it’s just for the kids and trick-or-treating, but if you’re up for some outdoor time in one of Montreal’s most diverse gardens (before it’s all covered in snow), check out the last day of The Great Pumpkin Ball at the Montréal Botanical Garden .

(falling for jazz) Montreal’s reputation as a jazz town is backed by The Montreal Jazz Festival’s Bistro Le Balmoral, a no-cover, a late-night jazz club every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m. The weekend of October 7 brings the Brazilian beats of Isaac Net and Elie Haroun. The weekend of October 13, see Jeff Johnston, Duo Félix Stüssi & Daniel Lessard and Yoel Diaz. Flamenco duo René & Isabelle kick off the weekend of October 20, with Flamencuras. And J.D. Slim plays October 28.

5 à 7

Luckily, Montreal is a city where it’s socially acceptable to drink during the day. In fact, we even have a name for it: the 5 à 7. This doesn’t denote your drinks per hour ratio (though it could) but rather the time at which most Montrealers start saucing.

Get initiated by enjoying a few cocktails at some of the Old Port’s hippest watering holes. Hot spots for a 5 à 7 are Le Local or Suite 701 (pictured above) for one of their famous white sangrias and a plate of their mini kobe beef burgers. After, head to the St. James- a favourite of visiting celebs and Old Montreal’s restaurant staff (highly recommend chatting one up for insider tips). Cafe des Eclusiers, a favorite of the city’s multimedia crowd, has something happening just about all the time, but Thursday is their official 5 à 7.

Dinner and Drinks

Aside from the wildly popular lounges and waterhole’s, Old Montreal also shines as a haven for gourmands. After you’ve whet your appetite you might find your bearings at the posh Chez Queux (pictured above). Or if you’d prefer something more casual, try L’Appartement for tapas and drinks, where on Wednesdays ladies eat free with the purchase of a bottle of wine. The busiest nights are generally later in the week, but don’t be surprised if these places are rippin’ on a Monday night.

Clubs

If the song I Wanna Dance With Somebody is your battle cry, then it’s time to hit the clubs. If Jello shots are your thing, maybe head towards St. Laurent. A more upscale party is always at Velvet (pictured above), Montreal’s exclusive nightclub and breeding ground for beautiful people. If house music is your jam, try the gay (and hetero-friendly) afterdark mecca, Bains Douches (used to be Tribe Hyperclub) late-night host to many a world-class DJ. This club is sleek and geared to a refined crowd and legend has it that the DJ booth glides up and down to the pulse of the bass. But if it’s bass you’re after, give the clearly well-named Bassment a whirl.

“Where do I get a good cocktail in Montreal?” – This question is frequently posed as travelers search out the ideal place to get their drink on. Well before I proceed with an answer, I want you to know that you’ve come to the right place. Montrealers love to drink. Late night parties are the norm around here. Bars and nightclubs are open until 3 AM, and then after-hours clubs continue the party to the wee hours of the morning. But when dinner has ended, and the bars aren’t yet hopping, what does a gay do? Well I’ll tell you — a gay goes for a cocktail. In the summer the choices for cocktails become plentiful with the restaurant and club patios spilling onto Saint Catherine’s street. But as the weather cools and the parties head indoors, it might be less obvious where your best beverage might be found. So here are seven places to whet the old whistle. —————————————————————————————————————— GOTHA LOUNGE – As a personal favorite, this cozy watering hole is classy yet unpretentious.
——————————————————————————————————————

GOTHA LOUNGE – As a personal favorite, this cozy watering hole is classy yet unpretentious. In the wintry months, there is a wood-burning fireplace that takes the chill off. The revolving art on the wall ensures that no visit is the same. Try the white cranberry martini.

Le SALOON – For many years this stylish eatery has been the “it” place to be seen in the Gay Village. With a DJ spinning while you dine, and the most comprehensive martini menu north of NYC, you’re guaranteed a deelish cocktail and some damn sexy servers.

CABARET MADO – For a drink and some debauchery, this is your best bet. The drag queens usually hit the stage around 10 PM. The drinks won’t be terribly fancy, but the costumes will be. Sit in the front row and you might get a chance to “interact” with Mado! Thank me later.

Le DRUGSTORE – The first stop for the ladies. With five floors of lesbian goodness, including a diner, a billiards room and a hair saloon, you’ll find all the ingredients for an exciting evening. In the summer, the rooftop terrace is the place to watch the sun sink over the city. Dreamy!

SKY PUB – A jovial atmosphere is found on the ground floor of this big gay complex. It’s here where many Montrealers go after work to chat with friends and to see what the cat might drag in. The beer is as cheap as the drag queens. Wait, am I allowed to say that?

CLUB DATE – The premiere karaoke venue in the village. Everyone leaves their inhibitions (and attitudes) at the door for a wholesome evening of Celine covers and pitchers of beer. Go and release the inner karaoke diva.

NÜVÜ BISTRO – The newest establishment in the Gay Village has taken “chic” to new heights. With daily themes projected in multimedia installations on the walls, the creativity might provide the backdrop for a new romance. Try the “Concombre Masqué” martini – all that cucumber yumminess might qualify the cocktail as healthful!

——————————————————————————————————————

Music and art go together like… well… John and Yoko. Where the cadence of a chord progression ends, the visual stimulus of a painting begins. On the first Friday of each month the Montreal Contemporary Art Museum hosts an event called Friday Nocturnes. They invite a trendy band or musician to perform, while giving visitors the opportunity to engage with contemporary art. It is an original way to visit the museum: have a drink, wander through the exhibits, listening to some cutting-edge live music and then have a leisurely meal in the museum bistro.

For instance, can anyone really remember how we maintained our fierceness before Lady Gaga? Montreal’s newest chic bistro, NüVü, has arrived. And she’s wearing designer duds. With staff uniforms created by internationally acclaimed fashion designer Philippe Dubuc, NüVü has stepped with a certain confident sass into the competitive Montreal restaurant scene.
Every once in a while something absolutely fabulous is introduced into our lives, and we are left wondering how we possibly survived without it.

Yes, there’s a chance that your server will be looking more modish than you, but please, don’t feel intimidated by NüVü. Open from 8:30 AM until the wee hours of the night, there is a time of day for every level of budget and fashionista.

A large part of the enchantment of NüVü is the unique seven-day concept. Each day of the week has a different theme that is represented in large-scale projections on the walls of the restaurant.

Monday: Oscar César & Cie
Tuesday: iTokyo
Wednesday: MAD (Material. Architecture. Design.)
Thursday: corps&graphies (Choreographies)
Friday: New York
Saturday: (b)eat it
Sunday: Fashion

What do they mean? To tell you would be to ruin the experience. You have to go and discover for yourself.

And don’t let all the flashiness of the design concept distract from the dining experience. NüVü is serving up some delicious (and surprisingly affordable) dishes. Executive chef Bernard L’Hôte was trained in France and Switzerland, and is skilled in balancing flavors while ensuring artistic presentation. If you’re a traveler with a budget, you can grab brunch for $20. Or, if you enjoy dining a bit later, they’ve got a 10 pm Table d’Hôte that starts at $19. The experience is most definitely accessible.

The creator and manager of NüVü, Denis Lefebvre, has brought something new and exciting to the already vibrant Montreal Gay Village. And those who frequently eat in the village can’t remember how they once entertained their craving for fine dining and stunning visual art before this bistro.

——————————————————————————————————————

The downtown district of any major city often tops the list of things ‘to do’ for a traveler. Montréal’s downtown is a mélange of stores, restaurants, cafés, galleries, corporate headquarters, and yes, those famous “adult cabarets.” Yet the central business district of every metropolis can risk blandness. And a selection of discriminating Montréalers have accused the downtown area of being overly commercial, with a heavy emphasis on big-brand shopping. And we understand that one could feel blasé in any given retail area. But among the generic giants there are plenty of gems. You just have to know what to look for.
Here are a few of our favourite things about Montréal’s Downtown district.

THE BEST OF DOWNTOWN

[urban space] QUARTIER DES SPECTACLES – This newly revamped section of downtown is home to many of Montréal’s famous festivals, including the Jazz Fest and Just For Laughs. Also features fun water and light installations.

[department store] SIMONS – This is Montréal’s favourite place to go shopping. Dating back to 1840, Simons has always featured distinctive pieces that reflect international trends, but with a unique Québécois flair.

[elegant bistro] DOMINION or ALEXANDRE – These classy French influenced bistros are perfect locations for a leisurely lunch during a retail marathon, or for a refreshing glass of beer after a hike up Mont Royal.

[party street] CRESCENT STREET – Home of many international parties, Crescent Street is a high energy mix of restaurants, clubs and special events such as Grand Prix themed fiestas.

[box office] LA VITRINE – Offers information, tickets and promotions for cultural events in Montréal, often a greatly reduced prices.

[museum] FINE ARTS or CONTEMPORARY ARTS – Two stellar art museums to choose from, both with stunning permanent collections and revolving cutting edge exhibits. Consult with websites for current features.

[park] MOUNT ROYAL – We like to call it ‘the mountain,’ but in reality its a beautiful tree-covered hill. Give yourself 2 hours and march up to the Kondiaronk Lookout for stunning views of the city.

[classic diner] RUEBENS DELI or DUNN’S FAMOUS – Featuring our renown smoked meat sandwiches, these diners are both Montréal institutions that will fuel your travel adventures.

[lounge] PHILLIPS LOUNGE – A new lounge that melds ‘private club chic’ with ‘welcoming modern vibe.’ A favourite among the young suit & tie crowd in search of a 5 à 7 (Happy Hour) post-workday cocktail.

[info] CENTRE INFOTOURISTE – A great resource for all travelers who might need ‘in person’ advice on their stay in Montréal or anywhere in the province of Québec.

[sky scraper] PLACE VILLE-MARIE – Arguably the most famous skyscraper in Montréal, the cross-shaped building has a rotating beacon/spotlight on the roof that can be seen up to 50 km away. A rooftop bar and restaurant called Altitude 737 features stunning panoramas of the city. A great place to chill after a day of shopping.

[underground city] RÉSO – With 32 kilometres of tunnels that connect the largest underground complex in the world, there is no need to freeze your arse off in the dead of winter. La Ville Souterraine, as it’s known in French, includes shopping malls, apartment buildings, hotels, banks, offices, museums, universities and seven metro stations.

——————————————————————————————————————

Insider Info: Montréal downtown skyscrapers are understated. The tallest building in all of Quebec, 1000 de la Gauchetière, stands at a mere 205 meters high (and features it’s own skating rink). That’s nothing compared to the Empire State Building which rises to 443 meters tall. But there is a very good reason for this subtly in stature. Local legislation states that no building may surpass the height of Mount Royal. We want to ensure our beautiful mountain will always be visible!

——————————————————————————————————————
