One of the world’s biggest entertainement franchises – Cirque du Soleil – has its headquarters in Montreal, the hometown of many of its top talent and management. That’s why the city was chosen to host the North American premiere of the Cirque’s first 3D movie, Worlds Away, co-produced by Hollywood behemoth James Cameron of Titanic and Avatar fame…

Worlds Away is the story of a couple falling in love (aerialist Igor Zaripov and the American Erica Linz, both longtime Cirque acrobats).

“I came to the idea of these two people who meet in a real-world circus. She’s a young girl looking to escape her life. She sees this aerialist and instantly falls in love with him, but when their eyes meet he slips and falls. He drops right through the circus ring into another world and drags her with him. They spend the rest of the film looking for each other”, says Academy Award-nominated director Andrew Adamson (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia).

The actors journey through dreamlike sets, interwoven with acts taken from all of the Cirque’s Las Vegas shows: O, KÀ, Mystère, Viva ELVIS, CRISS ANGEL Believe, Zumanity and The Beatles LOVE. Cameron, who even shot some of the scenes himself perched high up in the air and wearing a harness, participated in this movie a lot more than usual.

The movie “is a circus, there are wires and harnesses, we get to appreciate the ingenuity of the staging and the costume designs,” explains Cameron. He says the audience truly feels “the experience of being in the show, not literally as a character, but to be up there on the stage as opposed to way up in the top seat”.

A

Take a break in Montreal this week with days dedicated to amazingly affordable fine food, high-flying and inspiring on-stage entertainment, international film and art, family-friendly sounds of science, and lots of great live music…

(fantastic food) The food-centric week begins on Friday with an array of gourmet food trucks – from tacos to crepes to hamburgers – set up for your culinary pleasure at Montreal’s Olympic Park. For sit-down meals, check out Montreal’s TASTE MTL Restaurant Week, ongoing to November 11, with gourmet prix-fixe menus – from $19 to $39 – at some of Montreal’s best fine-dining restaurants. Choose by cuisine or discover new parts of the city by choosing by neighbourhood: spend an evening in Old Montreal, the next one at a restaurant downtown, in the Plateau or Mile End, Outremont, the Village or Griffintown.

(life on film) Film festival season continues in Montreal with the French-language – English subtitles usually included – Cinémania, to November 11, with features, shorts, retrospectives (including an extensive one on Sandrine Bonnaire’s films), presentations and Q&A sessions, and more. Among the many films, see Cinémania’s opener, an official Cannes competitor, Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone, starring Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts in a story of a former boxer, his son and a woman coming to terms with a life-altering disability. And on November 7, doc film fest RIDM begins its reign of real life representations, with films from around the world, including Peter Mettler’s The End of Time, Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Mekong Hotel, a series of 15 favourite docs chosen by 15 members of the film community, and much more.
(circus & theatre) Circus shows in Montreal are always an adventure of some kind, but that adventure is guaranteed to be thrilling and heartfelt with inventive and talented Montreal-based international circus troupe 7 Doigts de la Main – their latest show, Séquence 8, is chock full of stunning acrobatics and ensemble work, big laughs, great music and a love of circus arts and audience connection, at La Tohu circus centre to November 17. In theatre, Black Theatre Workshop extends its successful run of Harlem Duet, an award-winning play that spans Shakespeare’s Othello and the sentiments of Martin Luther King in a story of the struggle to gain true equality in North America. And Persephone Productions presents Shakespeare’s classic of classics Hamlet at the Calixa Lavallée Théâtre in Parc Lafontaine, November 1-10.
(beautiful bodies) International rock star choreographer Hofesh Shechter’s Political Mother is powerful, beautiful and moving – for dance fans or simply for anyone looking for a great show. With 10 extremely talented dancers and 7 musicians live on stage, Political Mother tells a story of hope in the face of tyranny – at Théâtre Maisonneuve at Place des Arts, November 1-3. In the same performative vein of dance-meets-music-meets-storytelling, Montreal choreographer Frédérick Gravel debuts his Usually Beauty Fails, November 7-10 and 14-17 at Cinquième Salle.
(east & west) The 13th Arab World Festival of Montreal entertains and informs, highlighting links between Arabic and Western cultures through music, performance, film, art and talks, to November 10. On Friday November 3, hear famed pianist Abdel Rahman El Bacha play works from Bach to Prokofiev and more, at Cinquième Salle. On November 4, hear the music of Algeria’s Hamdi Benani, at the Corona Theatre, while Zohreh Jooya and her Afghan dance ensemble captivate in a North American premier at Cinquième Salle at Place Des Arts, and up in the neighbourhood of Mile End at the beautiful Rialto Theatre, spend the evening at Goodbye To The Duels, Hello To The Duets, a concert for peace, featuring Moroccan singers Abderahim Souiri and Laila Gouchi. See the festival’s program online for full details and more.
(educational entertainment) The Montreal Science Centre gets kids and adults really listening with new exhibition Musik: From Sound to Emotion, a zone where science, creativity and entertainment meet. Learn how music affects different parts of the brain, how we experience music physically and emotionally, and get a chance to make music of your very own in the exhibition’s high-tech music lab. The exhibition is based on input from numerous scientists at Montreal universities as well as from musicians, including Montreal-based pop-punk band Simple Plan.
(joys of music) Friday night begins a week of great music with Montreal’s Esmerine, celebrating 15 years of Constellation Records, at the Musee d’art contemporain. Monday night sees Martha Wainwright pouring her heart out at the Corona Theatre, the sweet west-coast pop-rock sounds of Grass Widow at Il Motore, and a late night of dancing to the great Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice and more at the SAT. The week turns rock retro with Journey on November 5 and ZZ Top November 7, both at the Bell Centre. And Thursday night rules as Howl! Arts brings the great D’bi Young and Kalmunity Vibe Collective to Sala Rossa and NYC’s Yeasayer rocks Cabaret du Mile End.

The Montreal International Documentary Film Festival, also known as RIDM, opens its 15th edition with Peter Mettler’s The End of Time, a film that travels the globe to seek out theories on what time is and why we care about it so much. As in most of the best documentaries, The End of Time pairs stunning visuals with information that comes from many points of view, in this case, scientific, poetic, skeptical and spiritual. Bookending that inquiry is the festival’s Closing Film Journal de France, an artistic autobiography and professional memoir from famed French photographer and filmmaker Raymond Depardon and his co-director and wife Claudine Nougaret.

RIDM’s Official Competition delves into topics far and wide, including the creative process of filmmaking itself via Mekong Hotel, a suitably dreamlike doc by Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives). Argentinian director José Luis Garcia goes on a quest to North Korea in The Girl From the South, American filmmakers collaborate on Far From Afghanistan, animation mixes with reality in And Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, Montreal’s Magnus Isacsson shares the lives of four young people living in the neighbourhood of Montréal-Nord in Ma vie réelle, Jónsson Orri’s Grandma Lo-Fi captures the talents of an Icelandic grandmother and cult-music icon, and many more films take us everywhere from the depths of prison life to the heights of stardom.
Some of the best documentaries in history make a come-back at RIDM this year. In celebration of its 15th anniversary, the festival asked 15 filmmakers and other influential members of the documentary film community, including Philippe
Falardeau, Lou Reed, Gael García Bernal, Frederick Wiseman and others, to choose their favourite documentary film. A special $15 All-Time Favourites pass gives access to all 15 films – among them Megacities, Reel Injun and Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera – screening throughout the festival.
While the festival’s main draws can be found in the Official Competition with the latest international and Canadian features and shorts films, the fest’s Panorama selections are just as hot, exploring trends in documentary filmmaking, the latest in current affairs, the environment and human intervention, the intersection of popular and underground culture, collaborative and networked filmmaking and more. Along with all the film screenings, a series of presentations, discussions and other events with documentary film professionals prove that people, especially creators, are at the heart of RIDM, a festival where film lovers and filmmakers come together to keep the documentary genre vibrant and meaningful.

(film fest fun) The final weekend of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema has arrived, but there are still plenty of all-new feature films, shorts and documentaries to see, from closing film Camille Redouble by Noémie Lvovsky to an autobiography of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman to concert films about Peaches and The Chemical Brothers, plus a multimedia, multi-DJ “Suicide Hotel” party on Friday night and closing party on Saturday night with DJ Thomas von PARTY, at Quartier Général. Meanwhile, the 4th edition of the Montreal Stop Motion Film Festival, October 19-21, screens over 70 new stop-motion animation films from Montreal and around the world.
(intrigue on stage) Explore the Plateau and Mile End neighbourhoods via a true Montreal creation: The Phénomena Festival, to October 26. The festival of music, performance and art, is a reinvention of the 10-year-old Festival Voix d’Amériques, dedicated to showcasing the beautiful, strange and poetic artistic voices in this city and further afield. see artist and musician Genisis P-Orridge on stage with spoken-word group Thee Majesty on October 20 at Cabaret du Mile End, in film The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye at Excentris, and with art showing at La Centrale; as well, see Kobol’s marionette show Voodoo at Usine C, Kabin tells 15 stories via 15 small booths on October 20, duo 2boys.tv span the history of their performance career in Generation on October 21, plus free music and performances every evening at 5 p.m. at Divan Orange, featuring Teen Sleuth, Free Opera Ensemble, Jef Barbara and many more, as well as free open mic nights at 11 p.m. at Casa del Popolo.

(frightful & delightful) Halloween starts early this year in Montreal. If you’re downtown at Place des Arts in the Quartier des Spectacles on Saturday around noon, don’t panic: the zombie apocalypse is not upon us, it’s just people dressed up for the Montreal Zombie Walk – join in if you’re zombie-inclined. Freaks of a different sort sing and dance for our pleasure in The Rocky Horror Show, garnering some great reviews at Mainline Theatre, to October 20. And there’s also something a little freaky – in the most awesome sense – about DJ Food’s The Search Engine, an all-encompassing audio-visual experience like no other, screening in the dome of the surround-sound Satosphere at the SAT, to October 26.

(sports fans) A pro first for Montreal this week: the NBA Canada series pits the New York Knicks against the Toronto Raptors, October 19 at the Bell Centre. And while the NHL season is sadly on hold due to labour talks among hockey players and the league, the spirit of hockey is still strong in Montreal with national women’s hockey champions The Stars, featuring Olympic national team players Kim St-Pierre, Meghan Agosta, Caroline Ouellette and more. The Stars play Boston on October 20 at 5 p.m. and October 21 at 1 p.m. at Étienne Desmarteau Arena.
Quebecois playwright Suzie Bastien probes the human psyche in the dramatic The Medea Effect, at Theatre La Chapelle, to October 20. Old Montreal’s Centaur Theatre features Scapegoat Theatre’s take on Euripedes’ tragedy The Bacchae, to October 20, as well as Quebecois playwright Jean Marc Dalpé’s family drama August, An Afternoon in the Country. Meanwhile, the Segal Centre lightens the mood with Broadway musical Guys and Dolls to October 31, and well-known and even well-loved Montreal comedian and Just For Laughs festival veteran Joey Elias brings his One Man Show at Club Soda on October 21.

(live music) Friday night is indie-rock alright with Cat Power playing tunes from her new album Sun at Metropolis, The Sea & Cake at Il Motore, Dragonette at the Corona Theatre, and Brooklyn electro duo Blondes at Le Belmont.
Four years ago, the Montreal Stop Motion Film Festival became the first film festival in the world to focus only on stop-motion films: films that involve moving physical objects by hand and taking individual shots of each incremental change. Now the festival is a showcase not only for new and rare films – the fest will screen over 70 films from 20 countries – but features talks by filmmakers and animation professionals, two free (yes, free!) family-oriented film screenings, and a chance for anyone to take a crack at using Stop Motion Pro software.
CoInciding with the final weekend of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema, the Montreal Stop Motion Film Festival offers films that are a little different in their creative and production processes. The fest begins by looking at that difference on Friday night with a talk by Mark Shapiro of animation studio Laika, creators of the film Coraline. Shapiro takes us behind the scenes of the handcrafted feature film ParaNorman and is even joined “live” by the animated characters of Norman and Coraline.

Saturday and Sunday mornings begin at 11 a.m. with family-friendly free screenings of short, funny and captivating films selected from the festival’s official competition line-up. Screenings are followed by hands-on sessions with Stop Motion Pro software, where animators will be providing pro tips on how the software can make the intensive process of stop-motion animation a little easier. The afternoons and evenings are filled with competition screenings of juried films from professional, academic and independent filmmakers from around the world – winners will be announced on Sunday evening.
A few star experts of the stop-motion animation world will also be on hand during the weekend. With his puppets literally in hand, Wallace & Gromit Creative Director Merlin Crossingham will talk on Saturday evening about his career, his animation process, creating good stop-motion characters, and working with Aardman Animations studio. On Sunday afternoon, independent animator and teacher Chris Walsh leads a seminar the delves into the history and how-to of stop-motion, from Ray Harryhausen to Jan Svankmajer, and beyond.

October is basically worldwide film-festival post-season, as all the heavy hitters – Sundance, Cannes, Toronto – have come and gone. But this is also my favourite time of year for movies, as Montreal’s best general-interest festival, the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, is in town…

There are a lot of reasons to love the 41st annual FNC and its mascot, the she-wolf. For one thing, this is a festival with a truly vanguard programme – lots of things to see and do, every day, that you can’t see and do anywhere else. Which brings us to #1 on a list (not comprehensive, by any means) of things not to miss at the FNC.

1) Movies: On October 20, the FNC will sponsor a special advance screening of Ang Lee’s adaptation of Life of Pi, the Booker Prize-winning book by Montrealer Yann Martel. This is an eagerly awaited premiere of a story they said couldn’t be made for the screen, so we can’t wait to see it! Best of all, the film will be presented in 3D with special guest Yann Martel.

Other premieres include A Liar’s Autobiography-The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman, and movies by international art-cinema stars Alain Resnais, Mike Hoolboom, Cristian Mungiu, Olivier Assayas, Thomas Vinterberg, and many many others. Of course, you’ll also be able to preview some of the holiday-season movies that everyone will be talking about and the FNC has a high-profile competition, the Louve d’Or, for which 18 films will compete. The competition is for films from first, second and third features by directors from around the world. Trailer here.

2) Retrospectives: An homage to Nikkatsu: The famed Japanese production company turns 100 this year, hence a prestigious retrospective co-produced by Fantasia and the Cinémathèque québécoise. This is a big deal for amateurs of Asian film, as explained in this video of the press conference announcement. Also retrospectives honouring dearly departed filmmakers Chris Marker, Carole Roussopoulos, William Klein and Stephen Dwoskin.
3) Temps 0: My personal favourite programme at the festival is the edgy movies in this section, which always defy description or comparison. This year: Vincent Gallo plays two roles opposite flying saucers in The Legend of Kaspar Hauser, with soundtrack by techno giant Vitalic. Six Irish teenagers have a housewrecking party in SXSW favourite Dollhouse. Adam Smith’s doc The Chemical Brothers: Don’t Think. Tons more.

4) Little wolves (Les P’tits loups): Wolf children, little vampires, sea turtles, foxes, moonmen and many more populate this section, the best childrens’ programming at any film festival in Montreal, making this festival a must-see for kids as well as grown-ups.

5) FNC Lab: From experimental art, web projects, conferences, interactive installations, and don’t forget ten days of nonstop parties: There’s more to the FNC than movies. A salute to Carolee Schneemann and the erotic art of the 1960s is one attraction, Glenn Gould in The Idea of North is another. And check the site for what’s on, every day. There are art parties every night at both Centre PHI and festival headquarters.

A staple of queer cinema will return for a special 20th anniversary presentation. The emotional and evocative documentary, Paris is Burning, will once again bring us back to the piers of Chelsea and the roots of drag culture.

HOMAGE TO ELIZABETH TAYLOR & 30 YEARS OF HIV/AIDS

The fest will also play host to a talk by film critic, author and lecturer Matthew Hays examining the 30th anniversary of HIV/AIDS. Hays’ talk will be accompanied by a screening of We Were Here by David Weissman, a film that chronicles the AIDS crisis in San Francisco through a series of intimate interviews. The festival will also pay homage to the late actress and HIV/AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor with screenings of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Reflections in a Golden Eye.

SHORTS AND DOCUMENTARIES

The real beef of the festival comes in the huge collection of short films and documentaries from around the globe. The impressive roster of documentaries this year looks at homosexuality in traditionally non-accepting cultures around the world. I AM by Sonali Gulati and Wish Me Away by Bobbie Birleffi and Beverly Kopf look the most interesting to me!

Our picks for Montréal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinéma... October 18th ENTER THE VOID Directed by Gaspar Noé / France, Italy / 2009 / 161 min. His movies are never for the faint of heart. No matter if you’re a lover or a hater, Noé’s movies never leave anyone indifferent. This one is about the spiritual – or dare we say demented – journey of a gunned-down drug dealer in Tokyo. We believe this is a must-see on the big screen. October 19th OVER YOUR CITIES GRASS WILL GROW Sophie Fiennes / France, New Zealand, United Kingdom / 2010 / 105 min. An insightful documentary on the creative process of German artist Anselm Kiefer. Not your typical wordy documentary (interviews after interviews…), the movie’s narrative structure itself is said to be quite a piece of art. October 20th SHIT YEAR Directed by Cam Archer / United States / 2010 / 95 min. In the movie, actress Ellen Barkin, plays an aging actress (!) who leaves Hollywood and starts questioning her identity. Between “madness and grace” her world slowly crumbles… This is the second full-lenght movie of director Cam Archer, former protégé of renowned director Gus Van Sant.
MONSTERS Directed by Gareth Edwards / United Kingdom / 2010 / 94 min. Don’t be fooled. Although the title may suggest this is just another average “monster” feature, this movie is said to give american blockbusters a run for their money: it was made with only 15,000$, two actors and a three-person technical crew. No wonder it created such a buzz at the last Cannes Film Festival.

October 22nd

Described as a “pop-art movie”, this comedy hails from Thaïland with a unique tone that’s said to be morbid and funny – like a cross between Pee Wee Herman and Tim Burton!

FILM SOCIALISME Directed by Jean-Luc Godard / France, Switzerland / 2010 / 101 min. A new provocative movie by iconic director Jean-Luc Godard. His latest is a tryptic of sorts, and is a must for all hardcore cinéma lovers who’ve followed his work since the breakthrough of the French Nouvelle Vague.

October 24th

SUBMARINO Directed by Thomas Vinterberg / Danemark, Sweden / 2010 / 105 min. Two brothers living like strangers in the same city come face to face at their mother’s funeral. Director Thomas Vinterberg digs once more into troubled family matters, as he did so masterfully with his world-acclaimed Celebration in 1998.
