GAY HALLOWEEN IN MONTREAL

What do a sexy sailor, sexy devil, sexy politician and a sexy policeman all have in common? They’re all costumes usually found at big gay Halloween parties. Give an excuse for a queen to dress up and get wild with close to zero repercussions and they will deliver. Straight people don’t know this because they are rarely invited, but the gays and lesbians throw the most insane Halloween parties…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL: OCTOBER 21-28

No doubt about it, it’s fall now – the north winds blow, the leaves fall, the days grow shorter. Which also means Montreal nights are longer, and what better excuse to eat, drink and be merry well into the wee hours. Lovers of live music will adore this week in Montreal, as will lovers of film, as one film festival comes to an end and another begins. Montreal stages brace for drama, comedy, politics and the stomping of hundreds of horses hooves (seriously!). Art, poetry and spoken word round out the busy week with heady, ready made-in-Montreal creative stuff..

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL: OCTOBER 14-20

As Montrealers gear up for our favourite non-holiday holiday, Halloween, our imaginations begin to run a little wilder than usual – and so do we. All that energy has to go somewhere – maybe that’s why there’s such a variety of creative, rebellious things to do this week. A film festival that turns mainstream on its head, a rebel-yelling ska festival, experimental dance, avant-garde art and spoken-word performances, old and new rock n’ roll…

FREE THINGS IN MONTREAL: OCTOBER

As the warm weather truly wanes here in Montreal, our heralded free outdoor activities are slowly replaced by free indoor activities – so dress for both this October. Indoors and out, there’s much to see and hear: modern art, interactive dance, jazz, movies and more.

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (SEPTEMBER 30 TO OCTOBER 6)

Summer is over but Montreal’s busy fall season is about to leave all that fun and sun in its wake. As the days grow shorter this week, the nights light up here: in bars and restaurants – and for outside dining too, in theatres and music venues, in art galleries and cinemas. The weekend starts with an arts and culture bang with Les Journées de la Culture, three days of free entertainment around town and around the whole province…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (SEPTEMBER 22-29)

There’s officially too much to do this week in Montreal. That’s my professional opinion as a go-er and a do-er. Summer may have its multitude of festivals and picnic-in-the-park ways, but autumn packs a bounty of sights and sounds: over 400 bands and artists fill the city for Pop Montreal, jazz and classical musicians join in the music scene too (not to mention Kanye and Jay-Z), stages come alive with new theatre, dance and circus arts, and fashion, visual art and film bring in creative work from around the world…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (SEPTEMBER 15-22)

With summer behind us, we can now move on to more serious things. Like pop music festivals, eating hamburgers, singing karaoke classics and high-fiving extreme skiers. That’s just how Montreal rolls. But along with all that fun – all of which is actually happening in organized-event form this week – we’ve got thought-provoking drama and dance on more than a few stages, new mind-bending art, some very short films and, as always, rock n’ roll…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JUNE 23-26)

From festival heatwaves to dance-party downpours to perfect days in the park, June in Montreal has seen it all this year – and this weekend might just see it all too. The Montreal Jazz Fest sets its purple phasers to stun as it kicks off with none other than Prince, followed by a weekend of bee-bop, hip-hop, reggae, experimental and regular ol’ fun times. Friday is officially reserved for feting the Francophone culture that, unarguably, makes this city and province so fun, while Saturday night sees the sky above amusement park La Ronde light up in style. Plus there’s a festival on the Lachine Canal and plenty of art and music to keep us busy, indoors and out…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JUNE 9-12)

Just as the first real heatwave of the year ends, this weekend begins – but that doesn’t mean it’s not packed with super hot stuff to do. So hot that not even a forecast of scattered showers can put a damper on this action. Which is a good thing because much of what’s going on this weekend happens outdoors: a huge Formula 1 race (and parties and a beer festival to go along with it), a massive celebration of French music from here around the world, weird and wild independent theatre and music and street fairs galore.

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JUNE 2-5)

June is here at last, the month we’ve been waiting for, when summer comes on strong and the festivals come on even stronger. It can be overwhelming at times – the Quartier des Spectacles fills with people, three or more festivals happen simultaneously with hundreds of events to choose from – but there’s something to suit every pace. This weekend, go dancing rave-style or nice and slow, take in some local independent theatre or the kind that tours the world, or lose yourself in operatic Italy or Latin love.
