THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (AUGUST 19-25)

The end of August in Montreal is a sweet time – the days aren’t too hot, the night aren’t too cool, and the city seems to move at an even more relaxed pace than usual. Even with all the things going on this week in Montreal, leisure is still a central focus: chill out with a film at the Montreal World Film Festival, sail the seas of nostalgia at the Classic Boat Festival, make a temporary switch to Caribbean time at the Reggae Festival, or, if you’re wired a little differently, revel in the white noise of this weekend’s NASCAR race…

GRUMMAN 78: MONTREAL’S FAMOUS TACO TRUCK

In my neighbourhood, people really look forward to the weekend these days for yet another reason: Grumman ’78 tacos. Indeed, these tacos, which are now famous thanks to a Bastille day visit from Anthony Bourdain (more on this later), mostly exist as transient foodstuffs, sold out of their picaresque truck during most of the city’s major festivals. Otherwise, you gotta be in the right place at the right time…

ARCADE FIRE PLAYING FREE SHOW IN MONTREAL ON SEPTEMBER 22

Montreal’s Arcade Fire have just announced that they’ll be playing a free show at the Quartier des Spectacles‘ Place des Festivals on September 22, 2011. The show, part of Pop Montreal‘s 10th anniversary festival, is a tip of the cap to their hometown. “Our band couldn’t exist without Montreal,” says the band’s Régine Chassagne. “After having had the chance to tour extensively around the world, we’re very excited to finally come home. And to do so the Montreal way, we hoped to play a free outside show, on the very last day of summer as a big ‘Thank you’ to the beautiful city we love so much…”

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JULY 28-AUGUST 4)

Here we are at the end of July – only one more month of summer, but what a glorious month it is. July finishes strong with three final days of great comedy at Just For Laughs and Zoofest, along with the long-awaited outdoor music festival Osheaga in Jean-Drapeau Park and The Montreal Electronic Groove Festival in town. August rides that happy wave with The Montreal First Peoples’ Festival, the Festival of Fashion and Design, and plenty of music and arty happenings in the parks and in venues around town…

FESTIVAL MODE & DESIGN MONTREAL

The Festival Mode & Design Montreal is a glorious outdoor event that combines the city’s many loves: fashion, design, music and al fresco living. If you’re planning a getaway to our mighty metropolis this summer, this is a must-see, must-do from August 3 to 6, for fashion and design hounds, as well as the general culture curious. And best of all, it’s free…

FREE THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL: JULY

This year’s Jazz Fest is now over, but in its place comes not only more music but barrels of laughs alongside every funky beat and magical melody. Much of it for free too! Wild parades – Just For Laughs puts on more than one and Montreal’s Caribbean community struts its stuff – high-flying circus shows, live music from around the world, and, of course, outdoor dance parties are basically par for the course here in July…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JULY 7-10)

Oh, it’s hot in the city. And I love it. Of course, I also love air-conditioning. But during July in Montreal, it’s easy enough to strike a balance between too hot to handle and too cold to hold. With Jazz Fest still ringing in our collective ears and the mercury rising, it’s time to wear the bare minimum and seek maximum entertainment: this weekend, find it at one of many circuses, at a full-blown Caribbean carnival, in film fests and in the parks, and, as if any of us could forget, in the form of a guy named Bono…

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER EXHIBIT BY APELOPE

Salutations cherished personages. I am the one and only Apelope. I see nothing but beauteousness in the entities encompassing my vicinity. This is why my vocation as a Graphical Creator of Designs is as important as my love of fashion and my adoration of the genius that is GAULTIER!

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JUNE 23-26)

From festival heatwaves to dance-party downpours to perfect days in the park, June in Montreal has seen it all this year – and this weekend might just see it all too. The Montreal Jazz Fest sets its purple phasers to stun as it kicks off with none other than Prince, followed by a weekend of bee-bop, hip-hop, reggae, experimental and regular ol’ fun times. Friday is officially reserved for feting the Francophone culture that, unarguably, makes this city and province so fun, while Saturday night sees the sky above amusement park La Ronde light up in style. Plus there’s a festival on the Lachine Canal and plenty of art and music to keep us busy, indoors and out…

JAZZ FEST INTERVIEW: MISTEUR VALAIRE

Misteur Valaire play the Montreal International Jazz Festival on June 28. The Montreal Buzz caught up with the group’s Luis Clavis to find out where they’ve been, where they’re going and what they’ve got planned for Jazz Fest…
