With the Amphi-Bus, there’s no reason to choose! Reserve a spot for you and the kids on the Amphi-Bus and you’ll see Montreal two ways: onshore or off. The incredible amphibian vehicle transitions seamlessly from a road tour to the St. Lawrence River. Starting in the hopping Old Montreal corner of De la Commune and St-Laurent, the historically enlightening journey around Old Montreal will acquaint you with all the unmissable sites – Notre-Dame Basilica, Marché Bonsecours, Place Jacques-Cartier, the quais – before taking a dive into the river. Then you’ll see it all from the vantage point offshore, and take in the beautiful view out across the water. A special treat you can offer yourself is a romantic tête-à-tête aboard the Amphi-Bus during the International Loto-Québec Fireworks throughout the summer (starting on June 22).
(super-entertainment on stage) Let Cirque du Soleil’s Saltimbanco blow your mind with gasp-worthy acrobatics, genuinely funny clowning, and feats of strength and stamina, all in one bright, colourful, musical show. What makes this run super special is that it’s the last time Santimbanco – see it until December 30 at the Bell Centre. Also in circus happenings, Cirque Alphonse’s Timber! turns Montreal circus centre Tohu into in a Christmas-y forest populated by lumberjack acrobats, clowns and laughs, on until December 31. And the traditional, balletic holiday fare Les Grands Ballets’ The Nutcracker continues to December 30 at Place des Arts.

On Saturday night at 8 p.m. and on New Year’s Eve at midnight, the Telus Fire on Ice fireworks explode over the picturesque Old Port, also home to a huge outdoor skating rink. Families will also want to check out Noël sur l’avenue along Mont Royal Avenue east of Mont Royal Park, and the further-east Olympic Park Winter Village, where from December 22-24 and again December 27-31, kids and adults alike can go ice skating and sledding, hang out with Rudolph and the other reindeer, sing Christmas songs and more – there are even fireworks on December 31.

Less traditional: Party with the locals at the Third Annual Passovah Holiday Special on December 21 at Casa del Popolo, with bands, DJs and good, good people. The Objet Inusité International Summit on Audio Art is on at Eastern Bloc on December 21, with installations during the day and performances at 8 p.m., culminating December 22 with a bang at Sala Rossa with arty, fun music from Valleys, UN, Agor, Orkestar Kriminal ad DJ Matteo Grondini. On December 22, Indie Montréal throws a fab fundraiser Christmas Party at Divan Orange with David Martel , Ainsley McNeaney and Motel Raphaël. And fans of Alexisonfire either already have a ticket to their sold out shows or will be outside at Metropolis December 22 and 23 trying their luck getting one.
(light up the town) The Telus Fire on Ice fireworks go off with a bang on Saturday night in the Old Port, while Noël sur l’avenue makes shopping and dining along Mont Royal Avenue all the more festive with concerts, family friendly activities and more all weekend. Downtown at the Quartier des Spectacles, play with outdoor interactive musical installation Iceberg, part of Luminothérapie exhibition. And the Olympic Parc celebrates the grand opening of their winter site on December 15: from 11:30-8 p.m., help decorate their 15-metre Christmas tree, visit with Santa, and partake of gourmet treats from some of the city’s best food trucks.
(circus lights) Cirque du Soleil’s colourful, musical Saltimbanco fits right in with the festive season and delights with all kinds of acrobatics, juggling, feats of strength and stamina, and, of course, tension-diffusing clowns. Cirque returns home this month to mark the final run for the company’s longest-running show – 20 years! – see it December 19-30 at the Bell Centre, with behind-the-scenes packages available for some shows. On another musical circus note, Cirque Alphonse’s Timber! takes place in a forest full of lumberjack acrobats, clowns and family-friendly comedy – December 18-31 at Montreal’s one-and-only circus centre, Tohu.

(gift giving) Sometimes it’s just easier to shop in a town that isn’t your own. Take some of the pressure off gift buying by stopping in at some of Montreal’s hot, variety-packed craft and artisanal fairs. The Pop Montreal music festival puts on hip and super cute Puces Pop DIY & Craft Fair December 14-16 with an opening party on Friday evening, at Église Saint-Enfant-Jésus (5035 St-Dominique). The biggest fair of its kind in Canada, Salon des métiers d’art continues to December 22 with over 400 Quebec artists and artisans selling clothing, toys, food and much more at Place Bonaventure – see Santa every Saturday afternoon. And the smaller Old Skool Crafts Holiday Fair sees local craftspeople bringing their quality handmade goods to L’Église St-Michel (105 St-Viateur W.) on Saturday and Sunday.

(sounds of Christmas) Classical music and traditional Christmas songs fill December’s days and nights. Notre-Dame Basilica hosts the Montreal Symphony Orchestra performing Hector Berlioz’s L’Enfance du Christ with Kent Nagano conducting, December 19-20, and on December 14-15 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., eight Quebecois singers sing traditional Christmas songs for the Les Stars chantent Noël. On December 16 at the Gesù hear the French 18th century organ music of Les douze Noëls pour orgue de Louis-Claude Daquin. Québec writer Bryan Perro tells a magical, Christmassy tale of two villages as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra accompanies, December 14-15 at Maison symphonique de Montréal.
(sights on stage) The traditional December run of Les Grands Ballets’ The Nutcracker continues to December 30 at Place des Arts, while there are only a few days left to catch Robin Hood, as staged by children’s theatre experts Geordie Productions, at the Centaur Theatre in Old Montreal (453 St-Francois-Xavier). If you’ve been waiting years for Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol to be turned into a 14-song musical, well, that dream is now a reality, at Theatre Rialto on December 14. And critically lauded play Red , about the life and art of Mark Rothko, continues at the Segal Centre to December 16.

(outdoor sparkle) While the Old Port lights up to musical accompaniment every Saturday night at 8 p.m. for December’s Telus Fire on Ice fireworks show, the Noël sur l’avenue Mont-Royal brightens up a long stretch of shop-and-restaurant-rich Mont-Royal Avenue, beginning with a joyful, candle-lit parade on December 8, starting at Mont-Royal Metro at 7 p.m. and ending at Parc Lafontaine with choirs singing, music playing and fireworks too! And throughout the month, kids and adults alike can take part in all kinds of activities, including a tree decoration workshop, December 9 at Place Gérald-Godin. And over at the beautiful Montreal Botanical Gardens, the main greenhouse is decked out for the holiday season with lights, new plant life, choir performances on weekend afternoons, and a craft fair December 7-9.

(glimmering gifts) Find professionally handmade and unique gifts at Montreal’s craft and artisanal fairs this weekend. Over 400 Quebec artists and artisans offer clothing, toys, food and much more at Salon des métiers d’art, downtown at Place Bonaventure to December 22 – Santa even drops by every Saturday afternoon. Find more creative gifts at the festive Le Marché Casse Noisette, co-organized by Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, on until December 9 at the Palais des congrès de Montréal. Designers, artists and other creative types set up mini-boutiques at the hip, cool Smart Design Mart, December 7-9 at 5505 Casgrain, in Mile End. Also in the neighbourhood is the Old Skool Crafts Holiday Fair, at L’Église St-Michel (105 St-Viateur W.) – it continues next weekend too, rivalling the new-skool at Puces Pop DIY & Craft Fair. And head east to Haut & Fort Noël Market at Marché St-Jacques (2nd floor, 1125 Ontario East).
(fancy food & drink) December is a time to indulge in social delights and delicious things – both are plentiful at FoodLab this month as the restaurant, located in cutting-edge multimedia centre le SAT, offers a “Grandes tablées” menu of Québécois terroir: December 10-13 try the Terrine De Gibier & Pot-Au-Feu, plus appetizers and desserts, all for $45 a person. Or warm up in nearby Chinatown with a steaming bowl of cheap and cheerful pho soup. Later, get cozy with friends and friendly Montrealers at any one of the city’s neighbourhood brew pubs.

(art & sound) Family friendly activities abound in December, including entertaining, interactive art around the city: downtown at the Quartier des Spectacles, walk through and play with musical installation Iceberg and see several large-scale projections on buildings along Sainte-Catherine and de Maisonneuve, all part of Luminothérapie. It’s also worth the trip to Maison de la Culture Maisonneuve to make your own music inside The Improbable Igloo, an igloo-shaped dome made of speakers by artist Alexis O’Hara, on until December 20. And fans of the band Sigur Ros won’t want to miss a screening of Sigur Ros: Valtari Film Experiment at the Phi Centre on December 9.

(comedy & theatre) Comedian Jeff Dunham’s show on December 9 at the Bell Centre is sure to be funny and strange and puppet-filled, just like Christmas, right? Later in the week, check out the hilarious DeAnne Smith headlining and Al Lafrance hosting “giftalicious” stand-up comedy show Let’s Do This! – it costs a mere $5 or a wrapped present if you want to be a part of a wacky gift exchange – at Mainline Theatre, December 13. Children’s theatre experts Geordie Productions add entertaining new twists to the classic tale of Robin Hood, December 7-16 at the Centaur Theatre. And for more traditional holiday theatre there’s Les Grands Ballets The Nutcracker, December 13-30 at Place des Arts.

(classical tunes) The sounds of Christmas are writ large when The Montreal Symphony Orchestra teams up with the Montreal Bach Festival to present Bach’s Christmas Oratorio performed by internationally renowned Collegium Vocale Gent, December 12-13. On December 8, The Orchestre Métropolitain performs Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6, while on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, Les Choralies Christmas concerts find harmony at Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours in Old Montreal. Le Choeur Gospel Célébration sings its Noël Divin program of Christmas and holiday-themed music at The Gesù on December 9. Yet in Montreal there are still plenty of ways to avoid the cash drain – and not all of them involve being outside, though cross-country skiers and skaters take note: we’ve got what you need too. Art abounds at craft and artisanal fairs, outdoors and indoors, and in the sky during weekly fireworks events, and public spaces around town filled with people, music and dance performances, and even a parade or two…

(bright lights) Fireworks aren’t just the purvey of summertime here in Montreal – this month’s Telus Fire on Ice fireworks events are like an intense pyrotechnical substitute for daylight, brightening the sky and reflecting off the St-Lawrence River at the Quays of the Old Port every weekend in December (and one in January). Ooh, aah. Not only that, but on Bonsecours Island see fire dancing shows before the fireworks start and an ice sculptor at work on December 24 and 31. For even more entertainment at the Quays, stick around for music, art and more at the Old Montreal Extravaganza, December 9–31.

(the plateau lights up) Go beyond the usual tourist fare and and check out the 7th edition of Noël sur l’Avenue happening all month long, all along Mont-Royal Avenue in the Plateau neighborhood – a great location for restaurant-going and people watching. Activities include a Christmas Torchlight Parade, fireworks, music and creative activities for the whole family, including activities at Park Lafontaine and the Maison de la culture Plateau-Mont-Royal (465 Mont-Royal East).

(crafty idea gathering) Even if you’re not in the mood to buy, arts and craft fairs can be a boon for the imagination and a creative, social way to pass some time and see what local artists, artisans, designers and food-makers have in store this year. In Old Montreal, the massive Salon des Métiers d’Art is entertaining just to walk around, December 2–22 at Place Bonaventure. Minimal and modern, hip and sleek are on hand at Souk at SAT, Dec 9–10, at the SAT (1201 St-Laurent) and the Holiday Puces Pop Craft and DIY Fair brings together 85 vendors of handmade art, craft and design, from jewellery to socks, toys to posters and preserves, December 10–11, at St-Enfant Jesus Church (5035 St-Dominique).

(dance together) Sundays are active at the Bal du Dimanche at Place des Arts, a free learn-to-dance event that happens every month – this month, learn traditional Quebecois dances taught by dancer-choreographer Chantal Dauphinais. Whether you’ve danced before or not, it doesn’t matter – Bal du Dimanche is all about having fun, plus enthusiastic live band, RéVeillons, keeps the mood upbeat too, December 4, 2–4:30pm. In the same space on December 22, live music event Rendez-vous des rythmes du monde, brings sounds from far and wide, at 5 and 6:30pm.

(sing a song) Brush up on your Christmas carols and sing along with strangers (it’s a good feeling, really and truly) for the CBC Christmas Sing-In, December 4 at the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, doors open at 2pm. For those who would rather listen than sing, Les Choralies de la Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours present seven choirs that sing a diversity of Christmas music, traditional and contemporary, sacred and secular, old and new, at Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel (400 St-Paul E.), at 1:30 and 3 p.m. on weekends in December.

(child’s play) The McCord Museums’ Toys 2 exhibition is a mini-playground in a museum setting – and entry is free. The toys on display are both old and new, with the old serving as inspiration for the completely hands-on new: an igloo made of pillows lights up from the inside, at the McCord Museum. Kids can run free in the enclosed Christmas-themed park at the corner of St-Laurent and St-Joseph, where sing-alongs and other entertainment go on until Christmas – and, if you’re missing the Christmas-tree scent of pine or fir, it’s a good place to pick up a bough (or a whole tree, if so inclined).

(art happenings) During these days when the sun sets before 5, outdoor art that lights up the town makes a lot of sense. The University of Quebec a Montreal has become adept at lighting up building walls in its section of the Quartiers des Spectacles. See the light indoors at the MMFA’s Big Bang exhibition, a free, multidisciplinary, multi-artist show that runs throughout December and January. Big Bang sees 20 artists and other creative minds (such as filmmaker Denys Arcand, fashion designer Renata Morales, graffiti collective En Masse, and dancer-choreographer Marie Choinard) take inspiration from different works in the museum’s collection. And the MACM’s Quebec Triennial is a wide-ranging overview of recent and celebrated contemporary art – and every Wednesday evening, entry is free!

(self-made sound) If you’re looking for something a little different on Boxing Day this year, Le Placard Headphones Festival is definitely not your same-old same-old. Starting at 4 p.m. on December 26 and happening during the evenings on December 27 and 28, the free, international, DIY entertainment event invites everyone to play a song, whether it’s punk or a lullaby, show a video or film, or just hang out and see what transpires…

(skate on, skaters) Winter weather can seem downright balmy when you’re skating or cross-country skiing – bring your skates or skis to Montreal and keep that heat alive on the cross-country ski trails of Mount Royal Park or along the Lachine Canal. The Parc LaFontaine outdoor skate rink in the heart of the Plateau neighborhood is close to cafes and bars for after-exercise warming up. And, while it’s only technically free to kids under 6, ice skating at the Quays of the Old Port in Old Montreal on the St-Lawrence River is worth the $6 ($15 for a family) – bring your own skates or rent them on site, with special events like mid-day skate-alongs with Disney mascots, evening and ballroom matinee skates to music of the world.

How does the competition work? Well one fireworks company from each of the competing countries design and produce a fireworks show centred around a chosen theme. A pre-selected jury of around 19 people will vote out of 10 what they give the show that night. At the end, the winner takes the crown of Fireworks King!

Every Montrealer has their own opinion of the best vantage point to experience the fireworks. As a seasoned fireworks fanatic, I always go early with a blanket and get right up close to the water underneath the Jacques Cartier bridge. It gets crowded, so I really do get there at least an hour early. The closer you get to the water, the better. Some people like the side view from the Old Port, and some people like to trek up the Jacques Cartier bridge! The Jacques Cartier bridge closes down to cars during the hour during the fireworks show, but I personally think it’s a bit of a hassle to walk up onto it. The view from the ground is just as good.

However, if you can get tickets to see the fireworks show from the grandstand inside La Ronde, DO IT! I’ve only bought tickets to see the grandstand show once, and it was absolutely incredible. It’s like seeing fireworks in high definition IMAX. They literally explode at your face directly in front of you. You can hear the music over the speakers, and the details that go into the show. It was really breathtaking! I suggest doing that at least once during the summer.

If you go see the fireworks from underneath the Jacques Cartier bridge, skip the craziness that Papineau metro becomes after they are done and walk down Montreal’s famous Aires Libres! This is when they close down Saint Catherine in the Village, and restaurants, bars, and coffee shops set out patios. What a great way to end the night! Fireworks and then beer on a hot summer night? Sounds pretty sexy-awesome.

Every year the finale is a tribute using the music of a famous artist. Two years ago, it was the music of the late Michael Jackson, last year was the Quebecois superstar Celine Dion, and this year will be… drumroll… THE BEATLES TRIBUTE! This finale event is a non-competing one, and is always an incredible audio and visual journey. I hope they do some big pretty sparklers to “Hey Jude”.

Seriously, how can anybody say no to fireworks?

We love us our pyrotechnics in Montreal. Each summer, from June to late July, the top fireworks companies around the globe present 30-minute long shows on Saturday nights to compete for the top prize. The International des Feux, our International Fireworks Festival, attracts the world’s leading designers, bigbang technicians and sparkly optic addicts. The fireworks are synchronized to music broadcast over Rythme FM ( 105,7). Here are the top 10 locations to watch these weekly firework shows in Montreal: *A plane. My friend Lambert owns a plane, and took us on a magical ride one enchanted Saturday evening (since I know I’m lucky to have a friend who builds planes, I made the little video above to show off Montreal’s lighting and pyrotechnic wizardry). *The Amphi-bus.

Here are the top 10 locations to watch these weekly firework shows in Montreal:

*A plane. My friend Lambert owns a plane, and took us on a magical ride one enchanted Saturday evening (since I know I’m lucky to have a friend who builds planes, I made the little video above to show off Montreal’s lighting and pyrotechnic wizardry).

*The Amphi-bus. This boat/bus is a sea-land-vehicle that offers serious bang for your buck. You get a tour of Montreal by land, then launch into the St-Lawrence to watch the fireworks show from the river.

* La Ronde. Montreal’s amusement park is another prime spot. This close-up, you get the full force of the sound effects too. Spectators can purchase tickets online through the Admission group, or on-site to have reserved seats. Reserved seats start at around $32. Access to the site only (no rides), but with good viewing costs around $16.

* Foot of the Jacques Cartier Bridge. Stick to the Montréal side of the St. Laurent river, as it affords a killer view. Take the metro to Papineau and walk to Rue Notre Dame and Avenue De Lorimier.

*The Jacques Cartier Bridge is closed to traffic on fireworks night and makes a great vantage point (remember not to drive your car!). Access is from Avenue De Lorimier by heading NW.

* Longueil Metro station. A free little patch of green outside the metro exit faces the city and is pretty close to the fireworks too (follow the folks with the lawn chairs!).

* The Auberge du Vieux-Port. This classic hotel has an amazing rooftop terrace with a panoramic view of Old Montreal and the Saint Lawrence River. Open from May to September.

*Sky Pub in the gay village has a huge rooftop terrace. You’ll get a great view of the fireworks, and the hot guys. (Be sure to sport your bathing trunks, since the terrace also features a hot tub!).

*Mount Royal summit. Ok, so you’re not really supposed to wander the parks at night. But the main summit on Mount Royal affords a spectacular view of the river and the show. You’ll get a full panorama of the downtown too.
