If you’re not a winter person like I am, then you’ll know that the best thing to do when the temperature dips below freezing and white stuff starts to pile up, is to find the closest hearty meal, sleep it off and hope things are different when you wake up. Unfortunately, science and common sense dictates that no matter how hard we try to make the earth spin faster, winter is coming and we have to brace for it.
Montreal is in full festive mode this week, with Christmas lights twinkling throughout the city, not to mention fireworks shows, a candle-lit parade, and illuminated outdoor artwork. There’s also plenty of good food, family friendly entertainment, great arty shopping, holiday music and let-loose rock n’ roll.
In December, the Christmas spirit hits hard up at Jean-Talon market, and as a resident of Mile-End, most of my trips to buy wreaths and hot chocolate tend to be aimed in that direction. But it’s possible that Montreal’s other main market, the Atwater Market, south of downtown in St-Henri, is even more festive.
We all have that one person on our holiday shopping list that is extremely frustrating to by for. If you’re in town during this winter season and want to take a gift back home for that special someone, support local artisans and give a gift with true “Montrealais” attitude…
It took chef Normand Laprise close to 20 years to decide to write a cookbook and 3 years to put the finishing touches on the Toqué! book, which is coming out in English on November 28th. The most famous of Quebec chefs didn’t take the easy way out by writing a straightforward cookbook. The Toqué! Creators of a new Quebec gastronomy book is first and foremost, an ode to all the artisans who have contributed on a daily basis in making Toqué! the best restaurant in Quebec for the past 20 years.
Several music legends grace Montreal this week: Neil Young, Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen, Gilberto Gil, and well, more recent legend Justin Bieber. Whether you’re in town to see any of them or simply here to take in the plentiful sights, sounds and good food, there’s also plenty of entertainment for all ages at holiday fairs, on stage and screen, and out in the streets…
Probably the last thing chef Derek Damman would like to hear about his new restaurant Maison Publique, in the Plateau neighbourhood, is that it’s co-owned by British celeb-chef Jamie Oliver. Rightly so: the welcoming pub-like décor and the highly delicious and hearty dishes are all Damman’s doing. Oliver, his ex-boss and good friend, is a mere financial backer, who only visitted the place – and Montreal itself! – for the first time last Saturday.
