Every time I think Montreal is about to take a break from all the fun it keeps having, it pumps up the volume – this week, that means Montreal’s loud-and-proud Pride celebrations, an above-ground graffiti and skateboarding fest, five days of francophone-style blues and a weekend-long children’s festival. Plus the usual music, comedy, theatre (like The Lion King!) and general fun (always free!) in the sun…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (AUGUST 4-11)
After all the weeks of festivals upon festivals – jazz, comedy, world-beat, circus – August brings a slight reprieve. Oh, there are still hundreds of things to do this week in Montreal, but the pace of activity is more suited to August vacation time: relaxing in the park to film and music, taking in a play and some art, watching hot bodies on the volleyball court or on the catwalk, you know, the usual Montreal fare…
FREE THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL: AUGUST
As August is a vacation time for many, whether they’re staying in Montreal or headed to a cottage on its outskirts, the city’s pace slows down somewhat – the festival frenzy of the Jazz Fest and Just for Laughs is replaced by more even-keeled cultural events at the Quartier des Spectacles and plenty of free entertainment outdoors in the parks and streets…
ARCADE FIRE PLAYING FREE SHOW IN MONTREAL ON SEPTEMBER 22
Montreal’s Arcade Fire have just announced that they’ll be playing a free show at the Quartier des Spectacles‘ Place des Festivals on September 22, 2011. The show, part of Pop Montreal‘s 10th anniversary festival, is a tip of the cap to their hometown. “Our band couldn’t exist without Montreal,” says the band’s Régine Chassagne. “After having had the chance to tour extensively around the world, we’re very excited to finally come home. And to do so the Montreal way, we hoped to play a free outside show, on the very last day of summer as a big ‘Thank you’ to the beautiful city we love so much…”
THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JULY 28-AUGUST 4)
Here we are at the end of July – only one more month of summer, but what a glorious month it is. July finishes strong with three final days of great comedy at Just For Laughs and Zoofest, along with the long-awaited outdoor music festival Osheaga in Jean-Drapeau Park and The Montreal Electronic Groove Festival in town. August rides that happy wave with The Montreal First Peoples’ Festival, the Festival of Fashion and Design, and plenty of music and arty happenings in the parks and in venues around town…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JULY 21-28)
Whenever I travel to another city, I try to stay for at least a full week if I can. It’s nice to get this daily perspective and take the time to see what city life is really like. Of course, in Montreal, Tuesday has been the new Friday for about two years and a work night means going to sleep at 2 a.m. instead of 4 a.m. And that’s why I’m covering the whole week in this column now! Give in to the Montreal heat wave at one of many festivals – music, comedy, circus and more awaits all week long!
FESTIVAL MODE & DESIGN MONTREAL
The Festival Mode & Design Montreal is a glorious outdoor event that combines the city’s many loves: fashion, design, music and al fresco living. If you’re planning a getaway to our mighty metropolis this summer, this is a must-see, must-do from August 3 to 6, for fashion and design hounds, as well as the general culture curious. And best of all, it’s free…
FREE THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL: JULY
This year’s Jazz Fest is now over, but in its place comes not only more music but barrels of laughs alongside every funky beat and magical melody. Much of it for free too! Wild parades – Just For Laughs puts on more than one and Montreal’s Caribbean community struts its stuff – high-flying circus shows, live music from around the world, and, of course, outdoor dance parties are basically par for the course here in July…
THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JULY 7-10)
Oh, it’s hot in the city. And I love it. Of course, I also love air-conditioning. But during July in Montreal, it’s easy enough to strike a balance between too hot to handle and too cold to hold. With Jazz Fest still ringing in our collective ears and the mercury rising, it’s time to wear the bare minimum and seek maximum entertainment: this weekend, find it at one of many circuses, at a full-blown Caribbean carnival, in film fests and in the parks, and, as if any of us could forget, in the form of a guy named Bono…
