DIVERS/CITE 2011!

For almost two decades Montreal has been blessed with the most high-energy, inclusive, amazing and flat out FUN festivals: Divers/Cité. This year marks its 19th year celebrating anything and everyone under the rainbow from July 25-31, 2011.

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JUNE 23-26)

From festival heatwaves to dance-party downpours to perfect days in the park, June in Montreal has seen it all this year – and this weekend might just see it all too. The Montreal Jazz Fest sets its purple phasers to stun as it kicks off with none other than Prince, followed by a weekend of bee-bop, hip-hop, reggae, experimental and regular ol’ fun times. Friday is officially reserved for feting the Francophone culture that, unarguably, makes this city and province so fun, while Saturday night sees the sky above amusement park La Ronde light up in style. Plus there’s a festival on the Lachine Canal and plenty of art and music to keep us busy, indoors and out…

SUMMER AT JEAN-TALON MARKET

Locals know that a summer stroll around Montreal’s markets is not only a chance to connect local farms to your table, it’s also a chance for us to check each other out in the long-awaited sunshine…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL: (JUNE 16-19)

In the middle of June, we run into a problem here in Montreal: there’s just too much to do. Choices must be made – and the broader your tastes, the tougher the choices. For me, I’m torn between what’s bound to be a crazy French hip-hop show and just relaxing at the Montreal Folk Festival. Or going to see a hilarious one-man play about trying to find a job (universal topics: always a winner) or seeing a bunch of super talented and enthusiastic dancers show off their stuff in an empty pool. Weird choices to have to make, but I wouldn’t have it any other way…

SUMMER LITERARY SEMINARS IN MONTREAL

The Summer Literary Seminars are in Montreal for the second year. Now, before you all stop reading, you should know that this is one of the best festivals of its kind. Not saying much, you think? Well, you’d be wrong. The two week long seminar brings together world-class authors, up-and-coming writers and literary enthusiasts for workshops, readings and panel discussions in the heart of downtown Montreal…

MONTREAL JAZZ FESTIVAL 2011

For 10 days this summer, June 25 to July 4, Montreal goes jazz crazy. Well, not really crazy, more like extremely excited to the point of literally dancing in the streets. And, while I’m being honest here, it’s not all jazz either, or at least not any typical definition of it. For instance: music-world royalty Prince just agreed to a two-night stand here! Yes, the 32nd edition of the Montreal International Jazz Festival is as eclectic and diverse as ever…

FREE THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL: JUNE

June. As if there isn’t a better month in Montreal for free stuff? Seriously, June is where it’s at for no-money good times – namely because this is when festival season kicks into high gear with all kinds of free outdoor music shows at the Jazz Fest, FrancoFolies and the Fringe Festival, world-class fireworks displays every week, and an all-day party celebrating Quebec culture…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JUNE 2-5)

June is here at last, the month we’ve been waiting for, when summer comes on strong and the festivals come on even stronger. It can be overwhelming at times – the Quartier des Spectacles fills with people, three or more festivals happen simultaneously with hundreds of events to choose from – but there’s something to suit every pace. This weekend, go dancing rave-style or nice and slow, take in some local independent theatre or the kind that tours the world, or lose yourself in operatic Italy or Latin love.

JUST FOR LAUGHS FESTIVAL 2011: BEST BETS

An Angus Reid poll from last year stated that Just for Laughs (or JFL as we call it), our world-famous comedy festival, is the festival Montrealers love most. And locals always know…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (MAY 27-29)

This last weekend in May could be said to mark, if not the beginning of summer, the end of spring. With sunny days and warm temperatures on the very, very near horizon, the final days of May are anything goes. Weird, wild experimental theatre and dance? Check. A fancy food festival? Check. An entire day wherein all the city’s museums are free of charge? Check. An outdoor dance party on an island in the middle of the St-Laurent river? Aw yeah, check…
