THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JULY 21-28)

Whenever I travel to another city, I try to stay for at least a full week if I can. It’s nice to get this daily perspective and take the time to see what city life is really like. Of course, in Montreal, Tuesday has been the new Friday for about two years and a work night means going to sleep at 2 a.m. instead of 4 a.m. And that’s why I’m covering the whole week in this column now! Give in to the Montreal heat wave at one of many festivals – music, comedy, circus and more awaits all week long!

FESTIVAL MODE & DESIGN MONTREAL

The Festival Mode & Design Montreal is a glorious outdoor event that combines the city’s many loves: fashion, design, music and al fresco living. If you’re planning a getaway to our mighty metropolis this summer, this is a must-see, must-do from August 3 to 6, for fashion and design hounds, as well as the general culture curious. And best of all, it’s free…

FREE THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL: JULY

This year’s Jazz Fest is now over, but in its place comes not only more music but barrels of laughs alongside every funky beat and magical melody. Much of it for free too! Wild parades – Just For Laughs puts on more than one and Montreal’s Caribbean community struts its stuff – high-flying circus shows, live music from around the world, and, of course, outdoor dance parties are basically par for the course here in July…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JULY 7-10)

Oh, it’s hot in the city. And I love it. Of course, I also love air-conditioning. But during July in Montreal, it’s easy enough to strike a balance between too hot to handle and too cold to hold. With Jazz Fest still ringing in our collective ears and the mercury rising, it’s time to wear the bare minimum and seek maximum entertainment: this weekend, find it at one of many circuses, at a full-blown Caribbean carnival, in film fests and in the parks, and, as if any of us could forget, in the form of a guy named Bono…

DIVERS/CITE 2011!

For almost two decades Montreal has been blessed with the most high-energy, inclusive, amazing and flat out FUN festivals: Divers/Cité. This year marks its 19th year celebrating anything and everyone under the rainbow from July 25-31, 2011.

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JUNE 23-26)

From festival heatwaves to dance-party downpours to perfect days in the park, June in Montreal has seen it all this year – and this weekend might just see it all too. The Montreal Jazz Fest sets its purple phasers to stun as it kicks off with none other than Prince, followed by a weekend of bee-bop, hip-hop, reggae, experimental and regular ol’ fun times. Friday is officially reserved for feting the Francophone culture that, unarguably, makes this city and province so fun, while Saturday night sees the sky above amusement park La Ronde light up in style. Plus there’s a festival on the Lachine Canal and plenty of art and music to keep us busy, indoors and out…

SUMMER AT JEAN-TALON MARKET

Locals know that a summer stroll around Montreal’s markets is not only a chance to connect local farms to your table, it’s also a chance for us to check each other out in the long-awaited sunshine…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL: (JUNE 16-19)

In the middle of June, we run into a problem here in Montreal: there’s just too much to do. Choices must be made – and the broader your tastes, the tougher the choices. For me, I’m torn between what’s bound to be a crazy French hip-hop show and just relaxing at the Montreal Folk Festival. Or going to see a hilarious one-man play about trying to find a job (universal topics: always a winner) or seeing a bunch of super talented and enthusiastic dancers show off their stuff in an empty pool. Weird choices to have to make, but I wouldn’t have it any other way…

SUMMER LITERARY SEMINARS IN MONTREAL

The Summer Literary Seminars are in Montreal for the second year. Now, before you all stop reading, you should know that this is one of the best festivals of its kind. Not saying much, you think? Well, you’d be wrong. The two week long seminar brings together world-class authors, up-and-coming writers and literary enthusiasts for workshops, readings and panel discussions in the heart of downtown Montreal…

MONTREAL JAZZ FESTIVAL 2011

For 10 days this summer, June 25 to July 4, Montreal goes jazz crazy. Well, not really crazy, more like extremely excited to the point of literally dancing in the streets. And, while I’m being honest here, it’s not all jazz either, or at least not any typical definition of it. For instance: music-world royalty Prince just agreed to a two-night stand here! Yes, the 32nd edition of the Montreal International Jazz Festival is as eclectic and diverse as ever…
