One of the great things about Montreal in the summer are the hundreds of terraces (or patios, as you might know them) available to soak up the sunshine. With Aires Libres, The Gay Village becomes a pedestrian-only pink paradise, making their terraces all the more enjoyable… Since literally every club, bar, restaurant and cafe in the Gay Village has a terrace, it can be a bit overwhelming trying to find the perfect place to sit back and enjoy the sunshine. So here is my list to help you hone in on the exact place to fit your mood, tummy grumbles, or nightlife intentions. Best Terrace for a Beer: Drugstore. Nothing like kicking back with a relaxed crowd of lesbians and drinking a cold one. Drugstore is the premier Lesbian watering hole in the Gay Village. With a big terrace out front, on the side, and on the roof there’s many spots to catch some rays. Just don’t forget your shades! Best Terrace for People Watching: Cabaret Mado. You can’t miss the brightly colored Mado terrace, but you also can’t miss all the colorful people walking by!
Since literally every club, bar, restaurant and cafe in the Gay Village has a terrace, it can be a bit overwhelming trying to find the perfect place to sit back and enjoy the sunshine.

Mado is Montreal’s most famous drag cabaret, and is perfectly situated in the center of the Village making it a great vantage point for watching cute couples stroll by!

Best Terrace to Wear Your Leather: L’Aigle Noir. Leather might seem a little hot for summer, but it’s never hotter than on the muscular men on the L’Aigle Noir terrace! Don’t be intimidated though, these are some friendly gentlemen as long as you leave your lace at home!

Best Terrace for an Iced Coffee: Java-U. There are many stops in the Gay Village to get that much needed afternoon pick-me-up, but the wrap around patio at Java-U next to Beaudry metro will make you want to grab an iced coffee just for the taste of it.

Best Terrace for a Steak: Steak Frites. Insert the obvious big piece of meat / gay joke here. But in all seriousness, Steak Frites knows how to grill a steak and pair it with the only worthy vegetable: fries! The menu is simple, so you won’t need to ponder long on what to order. You’ll have either the steak with fries, or the steak… With fries.

Best Terrace for Star Gazing: Complex Sky. How fitting that Complexe Sky gives you the broadest and best view of the night sky. Their expansive roof patio puts you on top of the Village, above the canopy of pink balls. While up in the clouds (and yes, the shirtless bartenders do look like gay angels), take a dip in the swimming pool or get the torso-sized pitcher of house Sangria.

I’ll be covering the Gay Village all summer, so be sure to check back and see all the exciting things in store- from Divers/Cite to Pride, Community Day, Circus shows, art installations and more. Follow Tourisme Montreal’s 3rd Annual Queer of the Year competition this summer as well! Finalists from all over the world will be flown to Montreal to compete for cash prizes and the 2012 title. If you, or someone you know, have what it takes to be the next Queer of the Year, then send them along! See y’all this summer!
