There are two permanent stadiums: the large court, which has around 11,000 seats, and the smaller, more intimate venue which holds around 4000 fans, making it a fairly unique place to see tennis of this caliber.

Though unfortunately surging Canadian phenom Milos Raonic will not be playing due to injury, the best male tennis players in the world will be there (as a “ATP Master Series Event” it’s a mandatory tournament for the top 45 players in the world). As always, all eyes will be on the Top 3 players in the world: Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, whose rivalry is already considered one of the sport’s greatest, and, of course, Novak Djokovic, the world’s #1 ranked player. Djokovic, who spent four years behind Nadal and Federer in the rankings, grabbed the top spot with his incredible performance at the 2011 Wimbledon Championship, which culminated with a win over Nadal.

For the 2011 tournament, organizers have focused on creating more complementary schedules between the events in Montreal and Toronto, so tennis fans will be able to watch more of the women’s tournament on-site. But perhaps the most exciting news is that the one and only Jimmy Connors will be inducted into the Rogers Cup Hall of Fame on Monday, August 8. Connors, who played in the Rogers Cup eight times, is a former #1 ranked player who won eight Grand Slam singles titles and two Grand Slam doubles titles. He remains one of tennis’ great personalities, in large part for his amazing (and highly charged and contentious) rivalry with John McEnroe. This will be an unmissable week and a half for tennis fans.

Also, you don’t want to miss the PLAYER PARTY red carpet event, one of the most popular and glamorous red carpet events of summer. This year, tennis legend Chris Evert will be on hand, as will Misstress Barbara, Jean-René Dufort and celebrated Québec fashion designers in a runway show by Chiccane.com, a shop dedicated to local designers.

Here at the Buzz we promise to keep you posted on how to maximize your Rogers Cup experience, but for now here are a few Insider Tips to get you started!

Where to stay: Since there aren’t many big hotels near Jarry Park, chances are you’ll be staying downtown. The Fairmont Queen Elizabeth is the tournament sponsor, and right in the action. It also offers shuttle buses to the tennis complex! All Ticket Holders of the Rogers Cup also have free Access to the STM Public Transit Network, so any hotel near a metro will work.

What to do: The tournament is held in Jarry Park, in Parc-Extension. This is one of the most multicultural, harmonious and tasty neighbourhoods in Montreal. Start the day with a killer latte in Montreal’s Little Italy [link]. Prior to the match, pick up some fresh Quebec cheeses & bagette at the jaw-droppingly inspiring Jean-Talon Market, or try any of the authentic (and very affordable) Indian joints along Jean-Talon or upper St-Laurent. After your match, catch a show at the Circus Arts Festival.
