At Mutek this year, the A/Visions evening shows and Nocturnes late-night events herald close to a hundred artists. Multifaceted producer Matthew Herbert comes back to Montreal after an eight year absence to perform three projects – One Pig, a musical improv set centred on a war photojournalist’s audio, and a DJ set as Wishmountain – throughout the festival, the UK’s undefinable and deeply cool Jamie Lidell returns, as does Catalan house beatmaker John Talabot, Detroit techno minimalist Robert Hood, Germany pianist Nils Frahm, Japanese audiovisual artist Ryoichi Kurokawa, and Montrealer Ghislain Poirier unveils his new synthy, cinematic, minimalist project, Boundary. There’s even a special performance by Pantha du Prince and The Bell Laboratory at the Maison Symphonique de Montréal, the city’s recently built and acoustically impressive symphony hall in the heart of downtown at Place des Arts.

Those in the know never underestimate the greatness of Mutek’s opening event: this year, that night celebrates the 20th anniversary of German label Kompakt, with performances from American producer Michael Mayer, Saschienne and Swedish producer Alex Willner, a.k.a. The Field. The festival program rambles on in the best way possible with the return of British producer John Hopkins, German trio Brandt Brauer Frick, Raster-Noton duo Emptyset’s minimal noise and beats, and after years away, the jazz-infused sound of Frivolous. Also hear Mutek first-timers like young American techno experimenter Laurel Halo, prolific American producer John Tejada, and deep house makers Berlin-based Efdemin and John Roberts.

The Redbull Music Academy puts on a series of shows at high-tech, long-time Mutek venue the Society for Art and Technology, with the likes of Andy Stott, Martyn and Onra, Montreal fave Deadbeat, Space Dimension Controller, L.A.’s Nosaj Thing, and new Ninja Tune players Emika and Letherette. And on the last night of the festival, get right into Borderland, a new dub-meets-loops project from Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald, and a long, analogue-rich set by Juju & Jordash. Unbelievably, there are even more artists on the roster, and more still to be announced, meaning that, as always, Mutek’s a guaranteed good time.
Whoa. The Osheaga site sprawls across the park, with two giant main stages at its open-air heart and smaller stages – usually set to a theme, from folk-rock to electronic dance music; yes, there’s something for everyone – surrounded by trees and views of the St-Laurent river and the city. In the spirit of the fest, all show are happening outdoors during what we all hope will be sunny days at the Esplanade Du Centenaire du Canal Lachine – also a good reason to explore Atwater Market and the neighbourhood of St-Henri, just south of downtown Montreal. Now let’s get summer started early!
More comedy, of the non-sports-related variety, comes to Club Soda on April 17 at An Evening of Comedy for the Benefit of On Our Own, an organization that provides services and housing to vulnerable families, with Montreal funny people Joey Elias, Eman, Dan Bingham, Sebastien Bourgault and Jess Salomon.

(theatre & dance) Contemporary ballet meets the music of Elton John and plenty of sequins and bright lights and colours in Love Lies Bleeding, at Place des Arts, to April 14. Sinha Danse Company presents Sunya, a new work for four dancers and three musicians, inspired by Persian music, contemporary dance, and bringing different cultures together, part of the Danse Danse spring season, April 17-27 at Cinquième Salle. Danish dance-theatre troupe Granhøj Dans crafts dramatic theatre, comedic moments and sings plenty of Leonard Cohen’s songs in Dance Me to the End On/Off Love, to April 14 at Centaur Theatre, or entertain the kids with The Trial of Goldilocks, an updated fairy tale at Centaur Theatre on Saturday, April 13. And check out the experimental theatre of love u lovecraft [lab], inspired by the world of H.P. Lovecraft, April 16-20 at Bain St-Michel.

(fashion finds) Find out what many Montreal fashionistas already know at this year’s Braderie de Mode Quebecoise, a huge 50-80% off sale of samples and inventory surplus from local designers, April 11-14 at Marché Bonsecours in the Old Port – find unique clothing and accessories, talk to designers, and perhaps even meet some of the designers and people behind Montreal Fashion Week.

(art worlds) As part of the MMFA exhibition Peru: Kingdoms of the Sun and the Moon, see Peru on the big screen in documentary films from the TV5 series Amérikologie, playing on April 13 – free at the Maxwell Cummings Auditorium, and on April 17, attend an Afro-Peruvian percussion workshop with Kullak Viger Ross. Enter the labyrinthine fact-meets-fiction world of Laurent Grasso’s multi-room Uraniborg exhibition at the MACM, showing along with work by photographer Lynne Cohen and live performance conjured up by artist Tino Sehgal. Over at the Society for Art and Technology, see P3rception, surround-sound-and-image films shown in the Satosphere dome, to April 29. Hear more about the Thomas Demand exhibition at DHC/ART in a round-table discussion on April 17. And the Montreal Symphony Orchestra performs Beethoven’s Third Concerto, with pianist Till Fellner and Kent Nagano conduction on April 16-17.

(live music) Start the weekend with the psych-rock of The Black Angels at Le National on Friday night. Saturday, April 13 is a big night: choose from a massive show with Canadian rock-punk Billy Talent, Sum 41, Hollerado and Indian Handcrafts at the Bell Centre, the East-Coast folk-rock of Great Big Sea at Metropolis, Welsh alt-rock band The Joy Formidable plays Theatre Corona, the myriad musical styles of Montreal hip-hop collective Nomadic Massive at Club Soda, or great MTL indie-rock of The Besnard Lakes at Cabaret Du Mile End. On Sunday, listen to the live electro-pop of Rhye at Cabaret Mile End. Funnily enough, Monday night is also a big one, with Australian “metalcore” band Parkway Drive at Metropolis, and for those of us who like it loud, it’s a tough choice between Japan’s Acid Mothers Temple at Sala Rossa vs. Pissed Jeans at Il Motore. On April 16, tune in to Stereo Total at Il Motore. And on April 18, get your folkoric-pagan-metal on at Paganfest America 2013 with Finland’s Ensiferum, The Faroe Islands’ Tyr and more beer-soaked mayhem at Metropolis on April 18. Meanwhile, Montreal’s Bran Van 3000 and Paul Cargnello headline a fundraiser for community organization Le Sac à Dos at Club Soda.

After over a decade of such innovation, Elektra remains one of the festivals plugged right in to the new, different and digital. The 14th Elektra Festival, May 1-5, unites over 40 audiovisual artists and musicians under the theme of “Anti/Matter,” bringing immersive performances and art installations to some of Montreal’s most technology-driven venues, including PHI Centre, Usine C, Cinémathèque Québécoise, Goethe-Institut, and the Society for Art and Technology. All Elektra shows go beyond simply watching a screen or listening to music; they aim to surround us with sound and image in one way or another. And Hugo Arcier’s video projection Nostalgia for Nature, created with computer-generated images only, touches on one of electronic art’s biggest paradoxes: representation of the so-called natural through the so-called artificial.

Performances also come from Swedish filmmaker Joel Dittrich, whose White noise/Black noise explores the highs and lows of urban life, and artists Nohista and Tasman Richardson, who use tube television sets and Atari 2600 consoles to merge noise-sound and glitch-image. Elektra’s final night of performances, May 4, is devoted to Japanese electronic music label Atak, featuring acclaimed sound artist Evala and the algorithmic musical flow of Keiichiro Shibuya and Takashi Ikegami – as a bonus, Evala and Shibuya joins forces for Atak Dance Hall.

L’Igloo Improbable (pictured above); plus sound-art installations at Usine C and more at galleries Oboro, Skol, Occurence and the Phi Centre, also host to the International Marketplace for Digital Arts conference, May 2-3, where professionals scheme to bring us more of the latest and greatest in digital art.

The Easter long weekend sees Montreal relaxing as much as gearing up for springtime with plenty of things to keep everyone happy, whether you’re looking for delicious meals, kids’ entertainment, or the latest in arts and cultural happenings… (easter time) Celebrate spring in Montreal by spending some time in nature, indoors and out. Take the kids on a different kind of easter egg hunt at the Ecomuseum zoo or hunt for butterflies (with your eyes only) at the Montreal Botanical Gardens’s Butterflies Go Free special exhibition. Learn more about the environment and biodiversity at the Botanical Garden’s Base Camp and at the Montreal Biodome, where kids can discover live animals and plants from around the world, there’s even a (non-chocolate) egg exhibition in the lobby. And see even more butterflies at the Montreal Science Centre’s IMAX screening of Flight of the Butterflies in 3D.
(easter time) Celebrate spring in Montreal by spending some time in nature, indoors and out.

Visit the Montreal Botanical Gardens to learn more about where maple syrup comes from and try out the candy-like concoction of maple syrup on snow, until April 26. For even more sweet treats – and several savoury ones too – peruse Montreal’s excellent Italian delis, the Jean Talon Market or simply go for the classic Easter brunch at one of many Montreal brunch spots, from Old Montreal to Mile End, and pick up some chocolate along the way.

(dance & theatre) Danse Danse presents The Light Between, a new work of hope and vulnerability by Governor General’s Award winning choreographer Margi Gillis, to March 30 at Place des Arts, and, beginning April 4, the astounding Spanish flamenco of María Pagés as the star dances a show called Autorretrato, “a self-portrait created at Mikhaïl Baryshnikov’s instigation.” More dance takes the stage at the Centaur Theatre, where Danish dance-theatre troupe Granhøj Dans celebrates the music of Leonard Cohen – in intriguing, funny and surprising ways – in Dance Me to the End On/Off Love, to April 14.

New exhibitions at the MACM captivate with colour and intrigue with interactivity and every Sunday afternoon, kids and adults alike can participate in hands-on art-making workshops. Experimental, immersive, digital video art amazes at the SAT’s 360º Satosphere dome: audio-visual show Chaos and Order continues until March 29, followed up starting April 2 with P3rception, a program of three exploratory works that might just cause sensory overload: Diana Reichenbach’s animated film ||0.1.||, Eric Hanson and Charles Lindsay’s Carbon-X, and Ulf Langheinrich’s Hemisphere. And outdoors, projected on the face of UQAM’s Président-Kennedy building in the heart of the Quartier des Spectales, see animated film Le cycle de l’eau.

(live music) One of hip-hop’s best starts the weekend right on Friday night: Brooklyn-based rapper Talib Kweli gets lyrical with Koriass, Ceas Rock and Dj Manifest at Club Soda – the show is one of many at the Montreal Hip Hop Festival, happening all weekend. Also on Friday, Los Angeles indie-rock band Local Natives comes to town with Superhumanoids at Le National, and Saturday night is nothing but old-school LA punk with Bad Religion at Metropolis. On April 1, The Dear Hunter tour their new album Migrant, at Sala Rossa. Turn Tuesday night into a sweaty electronic music dance party with Chicago DJ duo Flosstradamus at the SAT or British electro-rock band Modestep at the Corona Theatre. On April 3, Alicia Keys and Miguel (!) put a spell on the Bell Centre and K-OS and Rich Aucoin shake up the Corona. And on Thursday, April 4, much-loved Francophone singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Damien Robitaille plays Metropolis and Montreal’s Suuns brighten up Sala.

On January 27, California psych-rockers The Growlers play La Sala Rossa.

February’s concert schedule may boast a virtuoso French composer and some of Canada’s most interesting indie acts, but let’s face it, some of you just care that Bon Jovi are coming to Montreal… Colin Stetson: If you don’t know this Montreal-based wind and brass master’s solo work, on display on the 10th at Sala Rossa, maybe you’ve heard of some of the people he’s played with: Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, David Byrne, Feist, Sinead O’Connor… Gipsy Kings: Perennial fan favourites The Gypsy Kings and special guests Nicolas Reyes and Tonino Baliardo bring their “rumba catalana” sound (traditional flamenco music with a pop update) to Place Des Arts on the 13th. Interpol: Though the New York indie rock band are no longer joined by bassist Carlos Dengler, they released a new self-titled album in September which will be on full display on the 16th at Metropolis. Goo Goo Dolls: Yes, the Goo Goo Dolls still exist. They play the Olympia on the 16th. Enrique Iglesias: Enrique’s latest song, Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You), has been a massive success on the charts. February’s concert schedule may boast a virtuoso French composer and some of Canada’s most interesting indie acts, but let’s face it, some of you just care that Bon Jovi are coming to Montreal…

Colin Stetson: If you don’t know this Montreal-based wind and brass master’s solo work, on display on the 10th at Sala Rossa, maybe you’ve heard of some of the people he’s played with: Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, David Byrne, Feist, Sinead O’Connor…

Gipsy Kings: Perennial fan favourites The Gypsy Kings and special guests Nicolas Reyes and Tonino Baliardo bring their “rumba catalana” sound (traditional flamenco music with a pop update) to Place Des Arts on the 13th.

You can bet that he plays that version of the song at the Bell Centre on the 17th, rather than the way more explicit one that you can easily find with a little digging.

Rich Aucoin: On a mission to prove that Maritime music is more than just a bunch of fiddlers, indie pop artist Rich Aucoin, who once travelled across Canada on a bike while raising money for kids with cancer, hits Il Motore on the 17th with (mostly) local acts The Pop Winds and Pete Samples opening things up.

Bon Jovi: Middle-aged women all over Quebec have had the 18-19 of February, when Bon Jovi play back-to-back shows at the Bell Centre, circled on their calendars for months now. I’ll leave it at that for fear of incurring their wrath.

Morcheeba: These turn-of-the-century trip pop pioneers have recently welcomed singer Skye Edwards back into their fold, and, having seen them live before, I can confidently tell you that you should go see them on the 19th at Metropolis.

Braids: I talked about this up-and-coming local act during last month’s concert roundup and the show had sold out before I even had time to press “publish” on the post. Good thing for all of us, that they play Il Motore on the 19th.

Yann Tiersen: Most people know this French musician and composer as the man who created the beloved Amelie soundtrack, but his live show (Metropolis on the 21st) is anything but predictable, with Tiersen playing piano, accordion, violin, electric guitar and more…

Tommy Youngsteen and the Million Dollar Band: The band playing February’s final show of note, at Casa on the 27th, features members of Stars, the Sam Roberts Band and The Stills. And when I tell you that it’s a Tom Petty/Bruce Springsteen/Neil Young tribute band, perhaps the name will make a little more sense.

When legendary Detroit techno producer Carl Craig plays Igloofest on Thursday, January 27, it will be only the fourth time he’s DJ’d in Montreal (most recently dropping a memorable set at Mutek in 2009). Montreal Buzz caught up with him at his Planet E offices in Detroit to find out what he’s got in store for us… Montreal Buzz: You’ve played all over the world, on many outdoor stages, but are you prepared to DJ outside in the middle of winter in Montreal? Carl Craig: I have a jacket that I’ve had for years and actually I just lost one of my favorite hats at a club in Windsor, but I think gloves are going to be the real issue… Montreal Buzz: Planet E (the record label that Craig founded) is celebrating its 20-year anniversary this year- is your set at Igloofest going to be a retrospective of sorts? Carl Craig: I’m usually pretty loose, but definitely I’ll be spotlighting the 20 years of history and representing all that’s happened on the label. Planet E has been my soul; it’s been a great outlet to get out my musical ideas and those of other people I admire.
Montreal Buzz: You’ve played all over the world, on many outdoor stages, but are you prepared to DJ outside in the middle of winter in Montreal?

Carl Craig: I have a jacket that I’ve had for years and actually I just lost one of my favorite hats at a club in Windsor, but I think gloves are going to be the real issue…

Montreal Buzz: Planet E (the record label that Craig founded) is celebrating its 20-year anniversary this year- is your set at Igloofest going to be a retrospective of sorts?

Carl Craig: I’m usually pretty loose, but definitely I’ll be spotlighting the 20 years of history and representing all that’s happened on the label. Planet E has been my soul; it’s been a great outlet to get out my musical ideas and those of other people I admire. These days when I look out at the crowd, I see a mixture of kids, young and old, and you can see the history there. But, you know, good songs are good songs, no matter when they came out.

Montreal Buzz: You’ve been at this for a couple decades- have you changed how you approach a DJ set?

Carl Craig: The older the fruit, the sweeter the berry! (Laughs heartily). Actually, my first gig ever was playing a family reunion, but a lot of my first real sets were shorter and it was just pure fun and making sure that people kept dancing. Now I usually play longer and it’s a bit looser, as I said, and I’m playing stuff playing based on music that I’ve made. Sometimes at (London’s) Plastic People, I’ll play the whole night and I get to expand and play my history but also play the future. I’ve learned a lot.

Montreal Buzz: How do you see your future and that of Planet E unfolding?

Carl Craig: I appreciate that, going forward, the music industry has changed so much and the lines are blurring- it used to be that an underground hit was actually underground which is often not the case now- and that the definition of what a “success” is has changed. Obviously we’ll continue to release music, but we also have to look at what else are we good at and ask what else can we learn?

With 3 full weekends of DJs and electronic musicians, plus a new second stage (or igloo, to be precise) located in their neon Igloo village, the names mentioned above are clearly just the tip of the iceberg. Make sure to check out the full schedule and skate on over to their blog which has interviews and, in many cases, music from most of the artists performing. Staying on top of all of this is clearly going to be a challenge, but don’t worry, they’ve got an app for that.

Get cultured. Get hungry. Get festive. Get your drink on.

Whatever you do, get yourself to Montreal this weekend.

Here are ten superb things to do while your here.

——————————————————————————————————————

Watch the show, then walk through the Contemporary Art Museum. Become more cultured-like.

[contemporary dance] HYMN TO THE UNIVERSE – Psychedelic dance meets legendary big band that brings the audience to a different plain of existence. Intriguing. Bewitching. Dancy.

[shopping] SMART DESIGN MART – A curated showcase of unique offerings from young, talented designers & vintage treasures. Your friends will think you’re cool if you come home with something designed in Montreal. For realz.

[family goodness] TRAVEL WITH POSTCARDS – The Canadian Centre for Architecture invites the whole family out to create a world tour through postcards. It’s never too early to start encouraging the adventure gene!

[holiday cheer] OLD MONTREAL’S EXTRAVAGANZA – If you enjoy festive lights, holiday caroling, skating rinks and all sorts of wintery delights, then you’re in luck. Even the Grinch-iest-of-heart stand no chance.

[classical music] VOICES OF HOPE – A World AIDS Day Benefit Concert to raise funds for La Maison du Parc. It is a great way to see some very talented musicians while supporting a very worthy cause.

[foodie fun] CHOCOLATE HUNTING – ‘Tis the season to eat sinful foods. These are three of our favorite chocolate shops to get your fix!

[fashion] EXPOSITION O.N.E. – 16 outfits fashioned from mass consumption products (aka garbage), accompanied by art videos and soundtracks taken from the Canadian music scene. A trashy transformative experience.

[gay life] COCKTAILS – As the weather cools and the parties head indoors, it might be less obvious where your best gay beverage might be found. So here are seven places to whet the old whistle…
