THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL: SEPTEMBER 14-20

Montreal is slowly starting to move indoors as summer fades away – things to do this week straddle the open-air events Montreal is famous for and the many sheltered options necessitated by the winter season. See films, dance and music shows in parks and in theatres, tour Tall Ships, meet Star Trek royalty, go to the Opera, or dance the night away…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (SEPTEMBER 22-29)

There’s officially too much to do this week in Montreal. That’s my professional opinion as a go-er and a do-er. Summer may have its multitude of festivals and picnic-in-the-park ways, but autumn packs a bounty of sights and sounds: over 400 bands and artists fill the city for Pop Montreal, jazz and classical musicians join in the music scene too (not to mention Kanye and Jay-Z), stages come alive with new theatre, dance and circus arts, and fashion, visual art and film bring in creative work from around the world…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (SEPTEMBER 15-22)

With summer behind us, we can now move on to more serious things. Like pop music festivals, eating hamburgers, singing karaoke classics and high-fiving extreme skiers. That’s just how Montreal rolls. But along with all that fun – all of which is actually happening in organized-event form this week – we’ve got thought-provoking drama and dance on more than a few stages, new mind-bending art, some very short films and, as always, rock n’ roll…

THINGS TO DO IN MONTREAL (JULY 14-17)

It would seem, at least this month, that the circus never stops in Montreal – for real! Circus festival Montréal Complètement Cirque goes strong all weekend in various locations and Just For Laughs’ Pinkarnaval parade and performance night are like stepping right into the three-ring – if it were directed by Jean Paul Gaultier. Festival Nuits d’Afrique has fantasic music options outdoors and in, while the Fantasia film festival turns the lights off inside so whole new worlds can pour out from the screen, and Kid Koala brings joy to our ears at the Biosphere…

THE LEGENDARY PIKNIC ELECTRONIK

The legendary (nay, the infamous) summer event that hardly needs an introduction, Piknic Electronik, goes down every Sunday from May 22 to September 25…

MONTREAL PHOTO ESSAY: PIKNIC ELECTRONIK

Piknic Electronik is Montreal’s weekly outdoor dance party. Each week under the cooling shade of Jean Drapeau’s finest trees, international DJs spin electronic music to the masses. The event exists to share traditional perceived “nightclub” music with those who prefer their luscious beats in the light of day. And after more than a decade of Sunday afternoon dance parties, Piknic Electronik is a certifiable Montreal institution. Some even consider it their new religion. Here are some photos from the weekly event.
