FORGET AMERICAN THANKSGIVING, ESCAPE TO MONTREAL FOR THE WEEKEND

Dear American friends, Thanksgiving is just around the corner. For many of you, this time of year represents festive meals and the opportunity to reflect on the blessings in one’s life. Yet for other folks, Thanksgiving is a tired and stress-inducing holiday where you’re forced to wear that god-awful chartreuse sweater that your half-blind aunt knit you while salivating over Don Johnson during a Miami Vice marathon. And let’s be honest, the embarrassment of smelling like Fixodent drool each holiday begins to erode one’s self-respect.

MONTREAL NEIGHBORHOOD 101: LITTLE BURGUNDY

We started our neighbourhood 101 series with the Plateau before heading south to St-Henri. When picking the next one, it made sense to simply take a quick stroll west through the Atwater market over to Little Burgundy, a neighbourhood rich with history, whose recent revitalization has been due in large part to the strength of its restaurants…

MEAL BREAKDOWN: EUROPEA

As we sat at our table at the posh Europea, the other night, a friend turned to me and asked: “I wonder if it will be enough if I start with the gaspacho and have the mushroom pasta as a main course….”, to which I immediately answered: “Trust me, it will be more than enough, you have no idea what surprises you’ll get along the way…”.

MONTREAL’S BEST SANDWICHES

I love sandwiches, I know sandwiches, I eat sandwiches. But so does almost everyone else. So, when putting together a list of Montreal’s best sandwiches I knew I shouldn’t try to serve up some hubris on wry without consulting outside sources. I therefore took to Facebook for a little groupthink on the subject…

STREET ( SORT OF!) PROFILE: SQUARE VICTORIA

Astute followers of our Montreal Street Profile series may notice that there is something different between today’s instalment and those about Bleury, Parc, Maisonneuve, Saint-Paul and Saint-Zotique. Yes, Square Victoria is not a street but it is surrounded by them and has enough stuff going on that it deserves its moment in the sun…

BACHELORETTE BASH IN MONTREAL

Seeing that I’m writing a book about hedonism in Montreal, my girlfriend in New York was convinced that my “cute little French city” would be the perfect place for her up-coming bachelorette party—and that I was the ideal person to send her a list of ideas. Of course, I had to agree, on both accounts (and add that Montreal is also a very safe city). But, I made her promise—in exchange for a girly-girl, good times itinerary—that there would be no matching pink t-shirts or plastic tiaras involved. Thank god, she agreed. Here goes…

NEIGHBORHOOD 101: SAINT-HENRI

A little bit south and a little bit west of downtown Montreal sits Saint-Henri. Though it gets a lot of press for being one of the city’s most “up-and-coming” neighbourhoods, the real key to Saint-Henri is that it is still very much what it always was…

STREET PROFILE : ST-ZOTIQUE

By all accounts, you seem to like reading our Montreal Street Profile series as much as I like writing it. Good for us. We’ve been to Bleury, Parc Avenue, Maisonneuve and, most recently, Saint-Paul. For the next instalment, we’re heading to Saint-Zotique, a street very near to my heart, or more accurately, my stomach….
