Hotel Chez Swann: Inside Montreal’s modern gothic boutique hotel

Hotel Chez Swann, a 23-room bijou of a hotel in the heart of downtown Montreal, hits a unique flavour with its interior design. It is replete with art – not only on the walls, but in the design itself, which includes elements that exceed beyond practicality to make incredible aesthetic statements that hit a modern gothic note. In certain areas if feels practically theatrical, with dramatic pops of colour contrasting with one another into an animated, lively experience, all conceived by artist and designer Mary Moegenburg. We caught up with the globetrotter on the phone from New Mexico, where she was working on her latest project.

NYC Loves MTL’s Festival Scene

Promotional content developed in partnership with The New Yorker Promotions Department. Montréal is a wonderful city to explore on foot, and one of my favorite places to start is the Quartier des Spectacles. Home to more than 80 cultural venues, including spaces for theater, film, live bands, and more, the Quarter is a great place to get a big-picture view of what’s happening in the city. Inside the landmark Le 2-22 building, I check out the animated art installation by Moment Factory at La Vitrine Culturelle. Ribbons of text and light stream in from different directions, mimicking the swirl of the city’s cultural offerings, while an interactive touch screen and kiosk serves as a ticket center and plugged-in information exchange for culture hounds like me…

Whether the snow is melting or falling this week in Montreal, it doesn’t really matter when it comes to having fun: visit the snow village, eat a meal soaked (or not) in maple syrup, see an all-star hockey game or a world-renowned dance or theatre show, an orchestra or a rock show….
