For its anniversary year, the McCord, which has recently re-energized its logo (pictured above), presents a special exhibit: 90 Treasures, 90 Stories, 90 Years. Five McCord curators chose their favourite pieces from over 1 million artefacts in the Museum collection: some objects are exhibited for the very first time.
Then, as the ‘icing on the cake’ of this anniversary exhibit, the McCord invited nine Montreal personalities from different creative fields such as fashion and architecture, to choose their favourite pieces from those already selected for the 90 Treasures main show. At the entrance to the exhibit, the McCord has pre-recorded iPods on loan. So as you walk around the exhibition, you can hear what each of these Montreal personalities has to say about their selection. Using the iPod, while you tour the exhibit you can choose your favourite pieces, comment on them – and email them to yourself, or to Facebook. Check out the McCord’s Youtube channel to get an idea..
MY FAVOURITES IN THE SHOW
I loved the Lady-Gaga-style shoes. Look closely. Delicate little silk brocade pumps, (1775-1780) with delicate heels and thrusting pointed toes, they have no left or right foot! I also admired a beautiful patchwork quilt. Dating from 1726, it is the second oldest quilt in the world. And I was amazed at the large daguerrotype camera – made of rosewood! Montrealers and visitors – adults and children alike – will surely smile as they gaze at the over-50-year old Canadiens hockey sweater (1943-53), from Maurice Richard.
Insider Tips: When you arrive at the McCord look up – and down. By the front door, charming little wooden birdhouses swing on the trees, and dainty old-fashioned slipper-footprints lead to the stairs. And have lunch or a cup of tea at the McCord Café or stroll over to the Boutique for a wondrous array of gifts for all ages.
