TRAVIS TADDEO POP-UP SHOP IN MONTREAL

Here at the Montreal Buzz we have our ears to ground – and we’ve got some EXCLUSIVE fashion news to put your knickers in a knot. Underground Montreal fashion designer Travis Taddeo gave us the inside scoop about his pop-up shop, which will happen the weekend of April 23 and 24…

If you’re not familiar with Montreal’s fashion scene, these kinds of events tend to be trendster social gatherings more than anything. Travis’ handsome PR man, Raphaël, has noted that guests and shoppers will be treated to bubbly, music, and of course, Travis himself.

I last interviewed the young createur at his fashion show not too long ago in Griffintown and was intrigued by his “dead celebrities” theme. Besides cobwebbed-looking details and t-shirts with morbid prints of a noose, actor River Phoenix’ face, and a scalp-grabbing hand (think Kill Bill); the separates in the Travis Taddeo Man spring and summer 2011 collection are to die for – sorry, I couldn’t resist.

The angelic faced designer describes the Travis Taddeo man as, “Self aware, self sufficient, and slightly self indulgent.” I like his easy style of loose separates for their comfortable fabrics, like linen jersey, tencel and denim. Most of the goods on sale will be for men (I do believe, however, that that tank top hoodie works for both men and women), but there will also be a selection of items for women – as well as one-of-a-kind samples that were made for photo shoots and editorial work. Cash only. There will be a ladies-only trunk show at Boutique Unicorn later on. So girlfriends, don’t worry if you can’t find any summer dresses and tunics.

The pop-up shop will be staged at Central Stamp & Seal (where they sell, uh, stamps and seals), the 60-year-old shop is such an odd choice for a designer pop-up shop, it almost makes sense. (For ye who taketh the #80 Parc Avenue bus every day, yes, it’s that spot between trendy wine bar Pullman and haute stationary shop Papeterie Nota Bene. Owner of the shop, Sacha Cantor, is a fan of wearing Travis’ designs. His unlikely spot was also, interestingly, the pop-up shop location last Valentine’s Day weekend for cult jewellery designer Himo Martin and his Pearls Before Swine collection. Says Sacha of the event, “It’s not corporate at all. Just a bunch of friends selling good products and having a good time. All good vibes, you know?” Yeah, we know. See you there!
