Why go to all the time, effort and expense of traveling the world in search of cultural adventure when you can scratch that itch for free in Montreal every summer? For the tenth year running, Weekends du Monde (“Weekends of the World”) showcases the rich cultural traditions of many of the diverse communities that comprise Montreal in grand multi-sensory style…
Over two weekends – July 5-6 and July 12-13 – Parc Jean-Drapeau, situated on scenic Île Ste-Hélène and Île Notre-Dame in the St. Lawrence River immediately south of downtown Montreal, will host a lively and vibrant celebration of the music, dance and culinary practices of a truly globe-spanning range of nations. The pathways through the park will take attendees on a figurative journey around the world.
Four main stages (and a number of smaller satellite stages) featuring day-long live music and dance performances will dot the expansive Weekends du Monde site as will kiosks offering indigenous foods from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, South America and more. In addition, a special cultural market will showcase artisanal wares representing the many diverse communities on hand.
Since its modest 2005 inception, the popular – and did we mention free? – Weekends du Monde event has enjoyed tremendous interest and growth, and last year alone welcomed over 218,000 visitors keen on discovering and exploring this United Nations of traditions.
