What to do on Easter weekend in Montréal

We’ve made it though the winter and are now headed for the gentle caress of spring. With Easter just around the corner—and an amazing long weekend in sight in Montréal—we’ve got the scoop on all that’s open and going on in the city for kids, couples and friends.

Mostly everything stays open in Montréal during the Easter weekend, with some exceptions, especially Easter Sunday. The STM bus and métro service, grocery stores, movie theatres and malls are open. Banks are also open, but closed on Good Friday. And tipplers, fear not: bars stay open too!

With the scent of spring in the air, kids are chomping at the bit to run wild. Let them live out their inner Luke Skywalker at Laser Quest or climb some walls (why should you?) at the Centre d’Escalade Horizon Roc or Allez Up. If they light up at the thought of glow-in-the-dark golf, take them to Putting Edge, or let them do some code cracking at A/maze Montréal. Put the pedal to the metal and splatter paint at Action 500 Karting & Paintball, or watch them freefall at SkyVenture Montréal. If they still have the skating bug, the indoor rink of Atrium Le 1000 is open all year long.

EspacePourLaVie-625x400Action not necessarily their thing? Take them to see a show at TOHU, soak up art at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts or let them get their geek on at the Montréal Science Centre. Montréal’s Space for Life (the Botanical Garden, Insectarium, Biodôme and the Planetarium) is perfect for a peek at a dazzling array of plants, animals, insects—especially the butterflies—and celestial bodies. If the indoors is too confining, let them get some fresh air in our major parks: Mount Royal, La Fontaine and Jean-Drapeau are great places to start with.

For something more traditional, you can go on a cool Easter egg hunt at the Ecomuseum Zoo and meet the Easter Bunny (who has a stash of chocolates for everyone) or go to the Dufresne-Nincheri Museum for an egg hunt in the garden and guided tour.

Romantique restaurantFun for couples

Tiny flowers pushing through the snow, buds burgeoning on trees, soft sunlight warming faces—Easter weekend in Montréal is an unbelievable kick-start (or re-start) to romance, and love is in the air. Looking for a place to get cozy with a drink? Montréal’s bars stay open all through the weekend and they are great spots to tuck into, especially if Mother Nature’s not ready to relinquish her grip on winter. If the two of you share a love of music, check out these happening venues that headline indie bands and quite possibly be witness to greatness in the making. Montréal is famed for its fabulous gourmet scene, and these upscale restaurants prove that good food is not only nourishing, it’s downright sexy. The inviting spaces and visual pop of Montréal’s museums make them perfect for twos to wander and ponder hand in hand. If springtime sets off the urge to splurge, book a room at a boutique hotel for your intimate Easter weekend: these little sumptuous little gems are a surefire way to spark the passion. And what better than a leisurely brunch to gaze into each other’s eyes and blush over the torrid night you just spent together?

Bal_en_BlancFun for friends

Easter weekend in Montréal offers up a bright big basket of fun for friends too. If shopping is your shared passion, Eaton Centre, Promenades de la Cathédrale Simon’s, Holt Renfrew, Ogilvy, Place Montréal Trust and Cours Mont-Royal are downtown’s go-tos and crammed with one-of-a-kind finds. Feel like just hanging out and gabbing over a cup of joe? Montréal’s indie cafés provide plenty of carefully crafted stimulant, knowledgeable barristas and unique aesthetic. We’re still in season play, so hockey buffs can cheer on their heroes in Montréal’s great sports bars. If jazz and blues is your groove, you’ve come to the right city; these cool venues have great music, storied histories and a vibe you just can’t beat. Speaking of beats, for those who want to shake it on the dance floor, you can hit up these clubs and let loose. Don’t forget, this is also Montréal’s Bal en blanc weekend – white hot dancing and a smoking line-up! While we don’t like to brag, sometimes we must: Montréal’s brunch scene is killer and seriously good sustenance is a great way to bounce back from the night before. With spring here and everything around brightening up after a long winter, take the cue and spruce up into these rejuvenating spas.

Happy Easter!
