  • BENT: AN OPPORTUNITY FOR HISTORIC QUEER THEATRE

    Posted by

“I love you. What’s wrong with that?”

    – Max (the lead character in BENT)

Sherman Miller’s critically acclaimed (and controversial) 1979 play, BENT, will be presented in Montreal from November 5 – 15, 2009.

I am highly anticipating this performance.

Find out how you can get tickets…

Written in 1979 by Sherman Miller, BENT is the groundbreaking story of acceptance, tolerance and love in the wrong time and the wrong place — Nazi Germany. The play starred international queer icon Ian McKellen in its original 1979 West-End production.

Over the years, many notable actors have tackled the role of “Max” (the lead), such as Richard Gere, Ralph Fiennes, Alan Cumming and even Clive Owen in the 1998 film adaptation. BENT is a critically acclaimed, historic theatrical piece that each queer person absolutely MUST see performed live at least once in his/her life.

And if you time it right, it would make a great night of queer theatre for your Montreal weekend getaway… just sayin’.

Says Carolyn Fe (artistic director), “For me, this play goes beyond the pink triangle; it goes all the way to accepting and believing in oneself regardless of how difficult the environment or the times may be.”

    And that is beautifully stated.

The Montréal Buzz posted a photo:	There's something magical about a city that lives below a mountain and it's difficult to express why that is...there's something about Mont Royal and how it watches over Montreal as if its duty is to protect the city day and night. It's also so profound how you can be entrenched in cosmopolitan life and minutes later be surrounded by nature...and those clouds; there's no clouds like the ones over Montreal--surreal and oh so beautiful. The Montréal Buzz posted a photo:	This is the view from our hotel room when my cousins and I spent the weekend in Montreal last July. The window looks directly up Avenue McGill College, to McGill campus and the mountain. I lived in Montreal during my time at the university, but this weekend was the first time my three cousins had been to the beautiful city. We spent the entire weekend walking up and down St. Denis, eating La Banquise's poutine in Parc La Fontaine, and napping in Parc Jeanne-Mance. But that first view of the city after our arrival at the hotel was definitely a moment that left my newbie cousins in awe of Montreal. The Montréal Buzz posted a photo:	The beauty of Montreal is found in the diversity of the people, the historic landmarks, the arts and culture that bring together residents and returning tourists, and surely, the ever-glowing lights. That morning we packed our bags and sought out crepes for breakfast before heading to the station. I cried while packing because I didn't want to leave - the four days we had spent in the city had been perfect. We decided to take one last stroll while waiting for our train. We walked out to the street only to discover it was closed off for the Pride Parade! I took a few minutes to snap some shots of everyone waiting for the parade to begin.
