  • CANDI BAR: MONTREAL'S NEW GROWN-UP TREAT

    Posted by

Ladies and gents, say hello to Candi Bar, the latest brainchild of Paulo Branco, owner of the already legendary Montreal bars: Gogo Lounge and Chez Serge Bar.  Made out of 80,000 pink and purple Mega Bloks (Canada’s legos), Candi Bar is hands down the ultimate nightlife destination for any gal who appreciates original drinks and playful design.

And you know if all the girls are going, logically, that means it will also be celebrated by the boys. Let’s see how long it takes them to start sipping on slushy pink cocktails!

Candi Bar’s specialty cocktails come in ten different flavors of slush (grape, orange, cherry and more) and are presented on a giant lollipop-shaped menu. After a fair amount of debating, my choice of drink was the Tiffany & Co.  Ingredients? Raspberry Smirnoff Vodka, Blue Caraçao and Raspberry slush. Topped with a ringpop. Sweet bliss.

Ok, so maybe going for the blue slush isn’t such a good idea when you’re trying to make an impression on that hotty sitting next to you (blue lips). My advice would be, rock the colored lips with confidence. MAC lipstick has nothing on Candi Bar’s palette when it comes to fun and delicious colors.

For drink number two, I went with the Sushi cocktail: vodka, lychee liquor and lemon slush. Served with chopsticks to fish the candy shark and octopus swimming at the bottom of the glass. (Don’t worry, there’s no raw fish involved).

I started singing along to Lily Allen, ordered my third cocktail and guess what? My bladder needed some appeasing.

They say you can always judge an establishment from its toilettes, so what does it mean when one of the stalls in the girls’ bathroom comprises two toilet seats facing each other? It means there might be some crazy line-up action as girls throw lets-pee-together-and-chat-about-boys-in-the-bathroom-stall parties….but that doesn’t matter. Betty Boop is playing on the flat screen TV and I’m enjoying this most perfect powder room to the fullest.

As for the circus-inspired men’s bathroom…do they make these sur mesure?

Also worth pointing out are the tables adorned with candy machines and the purple-legged stools, which are a source of much entertainment when you observe someone sitting on them from the back.

As you may have guessed by now, I’m very excited about Candi Bar. It brings out the child in us and makes us smile, for no apparent reason. That, to me, is precious. That, to me, is what nightlife should be about: FUN!

Cyndi Lauper is coming to town on July 4 for the Montreal Jazz Fest. For some reason, I can easily imagine her after-party happening here…

    • By Darren 10-05-11 at 8:22 AM Is it Candy Bar or Candi Bar? ugh....
    • By Joey 10-05-20 at 11:50 AM I was there last weekend, and had one of the best party experiences (for a regular weekend party) I've ever had.
    • By Tamy 10-05-20 at 16:57 PM Hey Joey! Really glad you enjoyed it there. We are big fans of Candi Bar as well :) xo
    • By Kevin 10-05-25 at 10:58 AM Hey this review was great!
I've been in search for a fun new bar for my birthday this month since the same old bars on st. lawrence is just not cutting it for me anymore.
So I had a couple of questions. One, how was the music (one of the most important aspects of a bar). Can you name a couple of the artists that you remember hearing?
As well was there room to dance? Just like gogos and chez serge, there is usually some place for you to shake your booty!
      thanks so much!

    • By Sarah 10-06-04 at 14:13 PM Does anyone know if there is usually a long wait to get in on a Friday night? I'm trying to find a place for my birthday.
    • By Kayla 10-06-07 at 19:14 PM hey, i was just wondering, what is the cover to go in? do you know the prices, approximately, for the drinks? now this bar looks awesome!
    • By Amanda 10-06-12 at 11:46 AM I just wanted to know, is there a specific dress code to get in, cover charge, etcc...
    • By Alyssa 10-07-28 at 15:32 PM I went on a Tuesday night. No cover, no dress code. But the interior is so pretty, you can't help but be tempted to dress accordingly and match with the candy-themed bright colors. The special drinks are amazing. 11$ for a tall glass and 2.5 shots. They come with candy! The bathrooms are cute, service is great, and there's a DJ!

My only complaint might be that there's no hooks in the women's washroom. I had to hang my purse and camera on the door handle and my camera fell and broke =(

But overall, I'd rate this bar 10/10 or maybe 9 because of the location. If they were located by McGill or Atwater, I'd be there every weekend!!!

Browse my twitpics for images. This place is amazing♥
    • By Gen 10-07-30 at 17:19 PM You have to know that its a 21 yeras old club and that one of the dorrmen is an ass****.
    • By Sascha 10-08-16 at 9:06 AM Went there last Saturday, scratch that... TRIED to get in last Saturday. The place was half empty yet there was a 45min to 1h line-up to get in. There's no dance floor available on Saturdays so this isn't a place to go to if you want to go out and dance.
    • By Sarah 10-08-19 at 9:11 AM I wish it WASN'T in the area because it attracts sub-species of fake hipsters and wannabes.
Enjoy diabetes and don`t get lost on your way back to McGill campus.
    • By John 10-08-24 at 13:59 PM This place looks awesome!
    • By Lolita 10-09-02 at 1:37 AM Was not able to get in a friday night and a saturday night. Really young crowd that only gets one drink and sit all night. So went to Couche-Tard, bought a slushie and gummies, poured some vodka in there and had my friends and I a blast at Rouge on St-Laurent....way better ! Too much girls in Candi Bar anyway, oestrogen level too high!
    • By KitKat 10-09-19 at 9:58 AM I went there this Friday with my friends and had a GREAT TIME. We arrived at 10:30 and waited about a minute outside, tops. The music was good the place has a very nice vibe. Even ran into Georges St-Pierre!!
    • By CAndy 10-09-30 at 23:11 PM ndy so my friends thought it'll be cool to celebrate my brithday there so we're going on the 16 cant wait!!!
    • By cee wong 10-10-07 at 21:09 PM im planning to go there this saturday for my bday and i was wondering if a guest list is needed to get in rather than lining up for a long time?
    • By Oly 10-10-17 at 13:15 PM It is really 21+?
    • By walkerp 10-11-22 at 12:30 PM Welcome to 1996 Montreal!
    • By peretzbenz 10-12-01 at 18:31 PM i was there last friday; the music was sub-par, honestly itunes genius is a better dj than whoever was spinning, we're talking real mix 96 stuff. unfortunately, the people (over crowded) and "atmosphere" did not make up for the lack of a good vibe. drinks were priced reasonably, but this is a place for the younger crowd.
    • By jenny 11-04-30 at 11:12 AM I went one time and it was great but last friday when we came back it was 21+, the bouncer said :the week-ends we want older custumers. I don't really think that there's a big difference between 20 and 21. To add to this de bar wasn't loaded and we would of be 4 more customers.
    • By Sabrina 11-05-01 at 21:32 PM I go there with my friends all the time. We get there a tad early to ensure we get in. Didn't know it was a 21+ club until the last time we were there though and the waiter asked us if we were over 21. I lied and said yes!
    • By Amanda Stefanovic 11-05-22 at 10:26 AM Worst place ever!!! Went there a few weeks back, drinks way to sweet i got a sugar rush, horrible music(like 80s)and way too crowded. A lot of young kids too! Went again last night for a birthday party we were 6 ppl ranging in age from 20 to 24 and the rude bouncer said no cause we had 2 ppl under 20. I told him that was illegal and he said not to waste my time trying to get them in trouble! Too bad! Assholes!!!
    • By Dan 11-12-06 at 18:05 PM What a night I had at Candi Bar
went for a quick drink and ended up staying till closing!

The Montréal Buzz posted a photo:	This is the view from our hotel room when my cousins and I spent the weekend in Montreal last July. The window looks directly up Avenue McGill College, to McGill campus and the mountain. I lived in Montreal during my time at the university, but this weekend was the first time my three cousins had been to the beautiful city. We spent the entire weekend walking up and down St. Denis, eating La Banquise's poutine in Parc La Fontaine, and napping in Parc Jeanne-Mance. But that first view of the city after our arrival at the hotel was definitely a moment that left my newbie cousins in awe of Montreal. I really needed to get out of Toronto at that time, to reflect, and to surround myself with new stimuli. It was very cold during the visit, but I spent a lot of time walking around anyway, taking photos, going to galleries, and visiting restaurants with old friends. This shot is on Sherbrooke, just west of the Main. I've posted this before, in a flickr pool called "It can't be more Montreal than this". I like this image because it looks like it's very cold out, and yet there are people moving about in what I think is one of the country's most charming cities.
