  • GAY CINEMA: GETTING THE HOMEGROWN EXPERIENCE

    Posted by

A couple weeks ago I mentioned that Montreal’s LGBT Film Festival (Image+Nation) was quickly approaching. I gave you the inside scoop on five films playing at the festival… before the program had even been released! I know, you are wondering how I get access to such top-secret gay information.

    Well, I have my sources.

But now the full schedule is up, and it’s looking good. Check out some of my recommendations…

    The Homegrown Experience

If you want to have an authentic Montreal experience, then you can’t miss Queerment Québec – a series of short films from local cinematographers (including the deliciously ironic Dayna McLeod). This year’s homo-grown evening will take place at Laika (4040 St. Laurent), where you can grab a glass of vino and see what Montrealers do with a video camera. Screenings begin at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28.

    Horror of the Homos

No, Kylie Minogue is not doing a duet with Nickelback. It’s not that kind of horror. I’m talking about gothic thrillers, ghost stories and good old-fashion blood n’ guts zombie flicks. This year’s festival includes more queer terror than the collective work of Bruce LaBruce. Feature length homo horror films include Dream Boy, Drool, Ghosted or Zombies of Mass Destruction. Or if you like it short and sweet, the HOMOhorreur collection of shorts will make you wet your pants. Check the Image+Nation website for various show times.

    Docs, Docs and more Docs

If “keepin’ it real” is more your style, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Image+Nation is featuring almost a dozen documentary films. Does hormone therapy and surgery make the man? Against a Trans Narrative will tackle the fluid relationship among body, gender and identity. What is the queer reality in Turkey? Kiliç’s documentary will uncover the The Other Side of Istanbul. What’s the difference between a march and a parade? Let Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride pose some questions on the “pride movement.” Check the Image+Nation website for various show times.
