  • MONTRÉAL NIGHTLIFE: JANUARY-FEBRUARY

    Posted by

While you might be more concerned these days with surviving the holiday eating season and making some solid New Year’s Eve plans, it’s never too early to start circling some dates on your early-2010-nightlife-calendar…

Let’s start with something free going on from whenever you’re reading this until January 6th, down at the Quartier des Spectacles. Some intrepid souls have set up what amounts to a massive “Lite-Brite” made up of 400 illuminated 18-inch pixels equipped with motion sensors. It’s open 24 hours a day but sunset is said to be the best time to go. Check it out.

Given that we haven’t even made through winter, let alone spring, you might be surprised to learn that the Montreal Jazz Fest is already selling tickets for next summer. You might also like to know that their “Jazz All Year Round” series is in full swing: you’ve got Carmen Consoli (January 6), Colin James (January 30), Jill Barber (February 3), a Django Reinhardt tribute (February 4-6) and a whole lot more on tap.

While big-ticket festivals like Jazz Fest and Just for Laughs may steal the spotlight, there’s nothing more Montreal than Igloofest. Now in its 4th year, this celebration of winter fun lasts for 9 nights in January down at the Jacques-Cartier Quay in Old Montreal. Since this is co-produced with the Piknic folks, you get some of the most interesting electronic music acts out there- LA Riots, Maus and Mad Kids just to name a few- but there’s also a ton of other winter-spurning fun to be had.

The concert and show scene usually takes a holiday break like everyone else. But hot dang, is it ever coming back strong in early 2010. Honestly, there really is something for every type of musical taste out there. If this is any indication of how Montreal is going roll in 2010, you should get your sleep now…

January 18: Tegan and Sara @ Salle Wilfrid Pelletier

January 23: Dinosaur JR @ Club Soda

January 27: Guns N’ Roses @ Bell Centre

February 4: Mariah Carey @ Bell Centre

February 6: The Magnetic Fields @ Corona
