  • NEW INSTALLATIONS LIGHT UP QUARTIER DES SPECTACLES

    Posted by

With our short winter days in Montreal, who couldn’t use a little light therapy? Luminothérapie (“Light therapy”), a series of interactive light shows in the Quartier des Spectacles, uses the city as its canvas and turns the area into one big gallery. At Place Émilie-Gamelin’s Éclats de verre, you’ll find a field of deconstructed stained-glass windows controlled (by you) via two spring-mounted cubes, while over at Place Pasteur you’ll find 12 different takes on illuminating the UQAM bell tower. Near the St-Laurent metro station is Forêt Forêt, a modern birch forest filled with the sound of your voice, while last, but certainly not least, is the amazing Nuage de givre, which is made up over 5000 containers filled with 100,000 water droplets, which create a light show which changes based on the day’s weather. Nuage de givre is open until February 2, the rest until February 26, 2012.

The window looks directly up Avenue McGill College, to McGill campus and the mountain. I lived in Montreal during my time at the university, but this weekend was the first time my three cousins had been to the beautiful city. We spent the entire weekend walking up and down St. Denis, eating La Banquise's poutine in Parc La Fontaine, and napping in Parc Jeanne-Mance. But that first view of the city after our arrival at the hotel was definitely a moment that left my newbie cousins in awe of Montreal. That morning we packed our bags and sought out crepes for breakfast before heading to the station. I cried while packing because I didn't want to leave - the four days we had spent in the city had been perfect. We decided to take one last stroll while waiting for our train. We walked out to the street only to discover it was closed off for the Pride Parade! I took a few minutes to snap some shots of everyone waiting for the parade to begin.
