REGGAE FESTIVAL: MONTREAL IS JAMMIN

Get ready for some of that easy skanking and roots reggae! The Quays of the Montreal Old Port are transforming themselves into a major “Reggae Village” of peace and love for the 7th edition of the Montreal International Reggae Festival. For the occasion, a slate of renowned artists, including original Wailers member, Bunny Wailer, are in town and carrying on the legacy of Caribbean music. Here’s wha gwanin’ as of August 6.

FRIDAY AUGUST 6 – Opening night celebrates Reggae, Calypso and Soca

With legends such as Byron Lee’s Dragonnaires, Pluto (a former original Dragonnaire gone solo) and Becket, pioneer of the Calypso/Soca genre, the opening night of the Montreal International Reggae Festival’s promises to be a groovy celebration of Caribbean music. To put you in the mood, here’s a 1963 lesson in ska motions…just in case they throw some at you and you feel a bit rusty in the ska dancing department.

SATURDAY AUGUST 7 – All about Dancehall music

Dubbed “Dancehall Night”, the festival’s Saturday night will see an eclectic gathering of all time favorites. The raunchy reggae rapper Lady Saw (the first female dancehall deejay to win a Grammy) will be sharing the stage with Baby Sham (that’s the lyrically adept artist well-known for his 2005 collaboration with Alicia Keys – think Ghetto Story) and Mr. Vegas (who you might remember for Heads High one of his many hits receiving heavy rotation in mainstream media outlets). The festival’s Saturday night is definitely a favorite among young adults seeking some heavy dancing and good vibes.

SUNDAY AUGUST 8 –  A day for resting is a day for vintage reggae

Vintage night will feature original Wailer member Bunny Wailer, Leroy Gibbons, Frankie Paul, Peter Tosh’s son Tosh1, and Tony Gits. Yet no matter which day you show up, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or all of the above, the Montreal International Reggae Festival promises to breathe vibrant life and positive energy right into your head and down to your toes.
