  • EASTER ISLAND: AN EPIC VOYAGE

    Posted by

Travel, people and culture : my ultimate three favorite things on Earth – and the reason behind my excitement for the Rapa Nui exhibition happening at Montreal’s Pointe-à-Callière museum.

    What?

You don’t know Rapa Nui? Don’t worry. It is, after all, one of the most isolated places on the planet. Thanks to the Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History Pointe-à-Callière though, I’m about to satisfy my thirst for knowledge and learn all about this distant land and people.

So where is this Rapa Nui Island you may ask?

Rapa Nui, or Easter Island, is a tiny speck of Polynesian land in the Pacific Ocean, some 3,000 km west of Chile. And by tiny I mean 165 km2, three times smaller than Montreal.  Yet, there is noting small about the culture and history of its people, the Rapanui. Their legacy represents an important part of our world heritage.

The exhibition will display over 200 pieces from collections of some twenty European and North American lenders. I have been obsessed with Polynesia since my childhood and this exposition will only strenghen my passion for that part of the world. Pretty cool to have Easter Island on Montreal Island all summer!

Where: Pointe-à-Callière Museum, 350 Place Royale, corner of de la Commune, Old Montréal, Square-Victoria Metro
    When: June 8 – November 14
    Info: (514) 872-9150

The Montréal Buzz posted a photo:	This photo I took represents the essence of Montreal. Taking the most beautiful place in Montreal, the Old Port, and using it as a backdrop to Montreal's other beautiful feature: the people! The Montréal Buzz posted a photo:	This is the view from our hotel room when my cousins and I spent the weekend in Montreal last July. The window looks directly up Avenue McGill College, to McGill campus and the mountain. I lived in Montreal during my time at the university, but this weekend was the first time my three cousins had been to the beautiful city. We spent the entire weekend walking up and down St. Denis, eating La Banquise's poutine in Parc La Fontaine, and napping in Parc Jeanne-Mance. But that first view of the city after our arrival at the hotel was definitely a moment that left my newbie cousins in awe of Montreal. The Montréal Buzz posted a photo:	There's something magical about a city that lives below a mountain and it's difficult to express why that is...there's something about Mont Royal and how it watches over Montreal as if its duty is to protect the city day and night. It's also so profound how you can be entrenched in cosmopolitan life and minutes later be surrounded by nature...and those clouds; there's no clouds like the ones over Montreal--surreal and oh so beautiful.
