    Giamatti has a city crush

Probably the biggest news item about Montreal this week, though not for Montrealers, is that we’re the city dreams are made of. Seems that Barney’s Version is has muscular awards-season legs–Paul Giamatti, who plays the titular Barney in the movie, won the Best Actor award at the Golden Globes (which are widely considered to be precursors to the Oscars in March). Giamatti beat out betting favourites Colin Firth (for The King’s Speech) and Jeff Bridges (for True Grit) and in his acceptance speech, he made some major shout-outs to Montreal, the city where Barney’s Version was shot and is set. “I also want to make sure to thank [the] incredible family of Mordecai Richler, who let me stomp around in their private lives, which was very kind of them. And [thanks to] an incredible crew, every single one of them, up in an incredible, beautiful city — Montreal — which I dream about. An incredible place in a great nation: Canada. And I salute the great nation of Canada.”

    The habs are on

In other Montreal news, Hockey. Habs fans will have a chance to see some of the rookies show their stuff this week as several of their star players are injured, including Mike Cammalleri, Max Pacioretty, Jeff Halpern and Andrei Markov. The team has called up a bunch of new guys from Hamilton, so keep your eyes peeled for the next stars on ice.

    The Gazette is old

Also, it was reported this week that this city boasts one of the oldest newspapers in the world– and it’s publishing again after 233 years. The Gazette litteraire, a magazine about philosophy and political thought, was founded in 1779 by Montrealer Fleury Mesplet, a French citizen who came to Montreal after the American Revolution. The original, 978-page volume, which was published in French (its descendant, the city’s Montreal Gazette newspaper, is published in English) has recently been reprinted after more than two centuries.

    • By Vicki 11-01-24 at 14:04 PM Loved Giamatti's speech! (Although, not to nitpick, he didn't beat out Colin Firth. They were in different categories: Giamatti won Best Actor, Comedy; Firth won Best Actor, Drama.)
