GENEVIEVE GRANBOIS AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

When I was a child, one of the first books I ever read by myself was Roald Dahl’s classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I used to drool just thinking about visiting this outrageously zany universe of chocolate heaven.

Chocolate maker Geneviève Granbois is well known in Montreal and her homemade chocolates are considered one of the best in the city. When I found out she had a factory, the little girl in me nearly exploded with joy and squealed with delight at the thought of seeing it. I just knew I had to go. Here’s my insider tour.

At first glance, I was disappointed to find there wasn’t a chocolate river or fudge room in the factory. However, my heart started pounding when I caught a glimpse of the bowl of the ‘imperfect’ chocolates for a brief instant.

Unfortunately, visits to her Chocolate Factory are not open to the general public, but while you’re in Montreal, be sure to sample some of these amazing chocolates at either location on St. Viateur Street or at the Atwater Market.

Made with the best cocoa in the world (such as Amedei Chuao), these chocolates are exquisite. With a cocoa quotient varying between 63 to 75%, the ganache fillings are all incredibly delicious. Some of the exotic flavours include saffron, chai, extra-virgin olive oil and caramel à la fleur de sel (made with the classic caramel from France). Absolutely irresistible.

As appealing to the eye as they are to the palate, these gorgeous chocolates are sold in tiny, metal boxes, like jewels. The boutique on St. Viateur is also an aesthetic delight and even won the Grand Prize from the jury at the Montreal Commerce Design Contest.

In addition to her handmade chocolates, Geneviève Granbois also makes delectable hot chocolate. In the winter, you can try it right there on the premises, or take some with you to make at home.

If you’re more of a caramel lover, she has pots of caramel sauce à la fleur de sel, and crunchy caramel dipped in chocolate.

Insider tip: There are about five types of chocolates that can be kept for a week without being refrigerated. Makes a lovely gift or souvenir to slip into your suitcase before you leave Montreal!
