MONTREAL JAZZ FEST: 5 PLACES TO EAT

Since you’re bound to work up an appetite shaking your tail feather at the Jazz Fest, I wanted to share with you a few good addresses for grabbing some grub on the go.

It’s easy to find plenty of good eats on the site of the Jazz Fest. Whether you’re into Louisiana cuisine, Mexican food or French pancakes, there’s a food stand for every craving. Numerous patios have also popped up, which means you can enjoy a beer or a glass of wine while taking in your favorite performance. And new this year, the Balmoral, a French bistro located in the middle of the action. A leg of duck or mussel jardinière will run you about $20 a plate, and the kitchen is open till 3am during the festival.

Also on the site of the Jazz Fest, Café du Nouveau Monde is a renowned bistro located inside the Theatre du Nouveau Monde. Try the homemade cannelloni for a boost of energy that’ll keep you going well into the night.

One block east on Ste-Catherine Street, next to Metropolis (a popular concert venue), you’ll find Ong Ca Can, one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants. They have a nice dinning room, lots of Vietnamese customers (always a good sign!) and a succulent shrimp salad. Plus the service is super-speedy – perfect if you’re in a rush to catch a show.

If you’re looking for a little peace and quiet after all that jazz, one of the nicest hidden terraces in Montreal is at European pub Le Sainte-Elisabeth. On weekdays from 4pm to 8pm, you can order a pint of micro-brewed beer for $4. They also have imported beers and a wide selection of whiskies. Got the munchies? Drop by before 9pm for some classic pub fare.

Finally, if you need a change of scenery, head one block south of the site to Chinatown. My favorite spot is Lotté Furama, where you can enjoy a nice dim sum lunch or choose from an impressive menu offering hundreds of classic dishes.
