Brace yourselves and your belts but not your wallets because Montreal is following in the foot steps of Toronto and New York with our very own version of the popular “restaurant week” and it storms through the bellies of Old Montreal in January. In typical Montreal fashion, it’s not just a week, it’s actually a 21 day celebration of some of the best restaurants this city has to offer…

Seven restaurants in Montreal will be slashing their prices to encourage people to delight in all the world-class restaurants this city has to offer. 2012 marks the fifth year of the festival, and it just keeps getting better. In essence, the Happening Gourmand means that you can enjoy $23 prix fixe menus at Méchant Boeuf Bar, Modavie Restaurant Wine Bar, Vieux-Port Steakhouse, Suite 701, Taverne Gaspar and $27 menus at Aix Cuisine du Terroir and Verses Restaurant. If that sounds overwhelming, don’t fear. We’ve narrowed it down to a selection of the best of the best for your epicurean palates.

Check out Restaurant Modavie, a romantic Mediterranean dinner and jazz bar. Nestled in the Old Port, this restaurant’s atmosphere can’t be beat. The restaurant features live jazz every night and an extensive wine list for your drinking pleasure. For a meal, order the Lamb, which is their house dish, or try the Filet Mignon, which is melt-in-your-mouth delicious.

The Vieux Port Steakhouse is always a treat. The restaurant is situated in a lush building that dates back to the 1880s and the atmosphere are chic and perfect for date night. If you’re wondering what to order, they’re famous for the their high quality steaks and seafood. You’d be remiss if you didn’t order the Smoked Salmon or the Three Peppercorn Steak, one of their signature dishes.

Aix Cuisine du Terroir is a must during Happening Gourmand. Indulge in the finest of fine dining at this Montreal hot spot where the food is elegant, contemporary and fresh. Strongly consider ordering the Beef Tenderloin from Mont-Laurier: it comes with layered potatoes, cream of morel and bone marrow. But if that doesn’t float your boat, try their homemade Gnocchi.
