Sustainability, social responsibility and making a positive impact on local communities is becoming more and more important to both leisure and business travellers. Many organizations, venues and accommodations in Montréal are taking measures towards making meetings not only more environmentally responsible, but also more meaningful before, during and after an event. If being mindful of the environment and giving back to the community are important to your attendees, here’s a quick look at a few Montréal examples of how you can be both green and giving that we’re proud to share.

Hotel Y

Located steps away from the Bell Centre and right in the heart of the city’s bustling downtown core, bookings at the Hotel Y offer both great value for money and the knowledge of your money put to good use. All profits are put right back into the YWCA Montréal’s mission to assist women of all ages in Montréal. Founded in 1875, the YWCA is one of Montréal’s oldest charitable organizations.

Auberge YWCA

Located in the same building as the Hotel Y, the Auberge YWCA is a four-star hostel with 32 private rooms serving the same charitable goals. Great proximity to some of the city’s meeting venues, bright and spacious rooms and value all combined in a redefinition of what a hostel can be.

BIXI and STM

stm.info
STM is the Société de transport de Montréal, operating the city’s transportation systems – both the extensive bus service and the city’s beloved underground Métro. Reducing traffic and pollution, many of the STM’s buses even proclaim their environmental impact on the back of the bus. The major event facilities are all located with easy access to the métro and some, including our main conference centre the Palais des congrès de Montréal has a direct indoor link to the system.

In 2018, Montréal’s BIXI bike system marks 10 years of providing bikes for everyone, easily signed out for the day or the season. As one of the first urban bike programs, BIXI has been emulated the world over.

The Centre for Sustainable Development

Host an event at the Centre for Sustainable Development and experience an inspiring building fully mindful of its environmental impact. Built on geothermal wells with recycled materials, green roof, living walls and motion-activated lighting equipped with low-mercury bulbs, it’s an example of just what can be done within four walls of glass and concrete

Suspended coffee

The concept is simple – when you buy a coffee at a participating café, you have the option to purchase a second coffee which is “suspended” until such time that someone in need requires one. Several cafés in Montréal have been a part of this program for years (look for signs reading “Café en attente”) and sometimes making just a small difference can change someone’s day for the better.

The rooftop of the Palais des congrès has long served as a green beacon in Montréal’s centre-ville. With vertical gardens and green spaces, the area impact ranges from tasty vegetables to a cooling of the nearby streets. But above and beyond just sky-high greenery atop the centre, there’s a section set aside specifically for the local women’s charitable organization La rue des femmes that truly helps make a difference.
